KIT: kit
« on: Jan 09, 2005, 05:31 pm »
I am in the process of assembling my kit.  I have a list of the basics, but I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for items that have been especially useful to them in the past.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I couldn't agree more... I also seem to use spike tape a lot... It always seems like I need to mark something somewhere.

And in case you missed it, check out this thread.

I'm always carrying insane amounts of stuff around when I SM- mostly because if I don't have it I'll need it.  Some of the things that I keep in stock are sewing kits, first aid kit, matches (I got this tip out of a stage management book whose title I have forgotten, but it was recommended to keep matches on hand both in case someone needs a light on stage for a prop and in order to provide a quick fix for sets that need a little more leverage).  I also usually keep an assortment of mints on hand for my actors.  I haven't tried post it notes yet, but I get crazy with highlighters.  (My favorite recent purchase was a ten pack, all individual colors- office supply heaven!) I also keep a roll of assorted tapes (duct, masking and painters tape which we use in low-budget productions as spike tape... it comes in several colors now, as does duct tape) on a piece of string so that I can tie it on to me.  Safety pins, extra batteries, extra makeup supplies (including nail polish, which came in handy for a show) and chocoloate to keep the actors happy.  I also keep an assortment of stage manager chew toys (jerky, very crunchy cookies, carrots, etc) on hand for myself.  Oh yeah, and pencils, erasors, spare scripts, spare notecards, spare hugs, spare............

Clear nail polish: good for fixing runs in stockings/tights. (Comes in handy when you have a lot of dancers in your cast!)

liquid bandage: I find a lot of people ask for that

small bell: good for rehearsal sound fx

Thank you all for your responses... I appreciate the input.  I'm adding to it slowly (a few inexpensive items here and there) as I really don't have much money to spend at the present time.  It's coming along slowly but surely.

Floss.
And Listerine strips or Altoid strips. These have replaced my bowl o'mints on the actor comfort tray, since they can pop one in and it dissolves rather than trying to chew an Altoid of their way to stage.

Go to newbielink:http://www.geocities.com/Broadway/Stage/2203/SMhandbook2.html [nonactive] and scroll down to "Comfort Zone"... The girl who did this has a very nice list of things you might want to put it.

condoms!

after all, it's fairly dark in a booth and when you have lots of time between cues and a cute board op who's also bored...

no really, for body mics and fake vomit (put honey and bread inside and have the actor break it in their mouth) they work quite well

Thank you once again.  My kit is coming together slowly but surely.  I'm using the Stanley mobile work center (which seems to be the favorite on this board).  So far, I have...

mini sewing kit, mini flashlight, matches, lighters, thumb tacks, cough drops, paper clips, safety pins, bobbye pins, hair ties, floss, clear nail polish, nail polish remover pads, cotton swabs, ibuprofen, waterproof medical tape, disposable razors, small stapler, staples, staple remover, glucose tabletss, antibacterial wipes, handy sacks (4 gallon plastic bags), mini lint roller, lotion, oral b brush-ups, kleenex, gauze pads, body adhesive, gaff tape, retractable sharpies, rubber bands, and a deck of cards

As I said before, I'm just picking up things here and there when I have money to do so.  Also, on the site DaftPenguu suggested, they mention a small photo flash with a test button.. does anyone know of a place where I can find one that's relatively inexpensive?

I'm so glad to hear that someone else carries condoms in their SM kit!  But make sure that you're using the non-lubricated ones.  We did a show which involved a lot of blood effects, and one of my actors nearly swallowed a condom full of stage blood because it was a lubricated (and thus slippery) condom.  Icky, icky, icky.  And explain that one without getting some kind of police report generated at the emergency room!

I have a friend who does sound, so I'm aware of the benefits of nonlubricated condoms for use on mic packs.
