Cleaning a Scrim
« on: Nov 02, 2006, 01:09 am »
(This may be in the wrong spot, but I didn't know where else to put it.)

I am the stage manager for a new High School. We recently but on Godspell, and, to make a long story short, we got the bottom 5 feet of our scrim dirty. Insteed of being white, it now is yellow. I am pretty sure there is no way to clean it, but I figured I should ask. So, does anyone know how to clean a scrim?

Did you try calling Rosebrand?  They're pretty helpful folks.  If they didn't make your scrim, they'll still know the best way to care for most drapery fabrics.

Part of the answer would be in what it was that got on the scrim.  Dirty water, fog juice, paint . . . Can you name the substance that colored your scrim?  We had water drip on our black scrim, and leave white residue.  We were able to give it a good brushing with a stiff bristled brush and get most of the hard water deposits off of it.

So see if you can identify the substance, and then I'll second the person who reccomended calling Rosebrand.

I've had luck washing everything from a hand-made silk wedding dress to a Victorian tapestry, by hand washing it with Ivory Snow soap, cold water in a large basin (usually a bathtub, but I don't think that would be big enough for a full stage scrim, not sure what would be).  Hang dry.

But, it has to be Ivory SNOW laundry soap, not just the regular Ivory.  It's the only stuff that's super gentle enough.

Good luck!

I'd call Rosebrand was well.  They're really good about helping people even if it's not thier product.

That wouldn't be big enough for the whole scrim, but if they put plastic down on the floor, they could wash it in sections - as much as could fit in the tub at one time.  Or whatever large basin they could get on wheels up to their stage.  I have this image of a tub on a furniture dolly running around in my mind . . .
