The Green Room / Re: ARTICLE: Tony Awards Cutting 2 Trophies
« on: Jun 12, 2014, 08:37 am »
Here's a great quote from signer Stephen Trask:

Quote
I can't imagine the success of my musical "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" without the talents of our Tony Award nominated sound designer Tim O'Heir and his amazing team. The sound required for that show shouldn't even be possible in an century old dramatic house like the Belasco, designed before amplification and with the idea of making the spoken voice resonate in the back of the upper sections. The tireless work this crew performed, from auditioning speakers and microphones, to interacting with the set design, to constant refinement of the sound to adjust to the specifics of the performances and the vagaries of the theater, was one of the lynchpins of this production.

The Green Room / Re: Signs You're a SM

Thanks for the link: I figured someone else had to have posted something similar. It's like when I worked for Disney: some things never leave you, even when you're not "on duty."

The Green Room / Signs You're a SM
« on: Jun 03, 2014, 09:59 am »
I recently stayed with my cousin a few days. To help out, I decided to help her two-year-old clean her room. One morning we go to hang up her clothes and I ask her to move the doll baby bed away from her closet door so I can reach inside. Here's where my brain went: "Hmm, that's not a good storage area for that item, it's blocking an entrance. There's a nice place just the right size by her bed we could spike it."

I stopped myself before saying any of it out loud, but the impulse to put down tape and label was very strong.

As everyone else said, thanks for sharing your story. One of my cousins once moved to Alaska for a similar reason, though her's was military: she was required to serve "abroad," but could keep her son with her if she agreed to serve in Alaska for three years. They had an amazing experience: be sure to see if where you're moving has a Midnight Sun festival. Sometimes I've felt like I did more creative things when I wasn't doing as many "pro" jobs; I pray you'll be able to find similar outlets. Thanks for the blog link.

The Green Room / Re: AUDIENCES: E-Cigarettes

Worse than a patron: in the past year I observed someone in a leadership position light up during a break (not outside). I wondered if other people were having similar problems.

Thanks for sharing. I'm contemplating a lot of potential changes in the next year, and it's encouraging to read about how you've opened up new opportunities for yourself. It's so difficult to say "No" to a gig, but it's a powerful tool (that's a lesson I've learned the hard way). Best of wishes on your next show.

Thanks for the offer, dallas: let me get through tech this weekend and I'll know better. :)

The Hardline / Re: AEA ASM & EMC

I'll second Ruth's question: I've just joined the EMC program in the last year and would like to know what challenges are ahead.

I saw Rupert's picture on Twitter and he looks fantastic. I don't know if I'll have a chance to swing by with the show I'm working on, but I'd certainly love to.

Introductions / Re: Why Did It Take Me 2 Years To Say Hi?

Maybe for the same reason it took me so long to create an account; I agree, this forum is a wealth of good information and advice. So, "Hi Shae!" Glad to hear your're getting work and enjoying it.

If for example, you have been writing actors notes, would you apologize to your cast in an email for doing so to bring together the morale again or if anyone was insulted?

It seems to me something like that should be said in person rather than in an email: possibly ask everyone to come to the green room prior to the show, or if it's a small cast go to each person individually in the dressing rooms. Also, make sure you discuss such a change in policy with the director, producer, or someone on the artistic staff of the theatre prior to making such a unilateral decision on your own.

Hello all. I discovered this forum last year and found a lot of helpful tips. I thought I'd finally join and make full use of this resource (and hopefully help others). I've been stage managing professionally for about two years now, but I'm also an actor and director (and I've been known to hang lights, paint sets, and just about everything else in the Biz).

Here's a tip for all: pay careful attention to quick exit/entrances, especially when rehearsing in a space where the transit time from one side of the "stage" to another is much shorter than in the actual playing area. In college I once observed a dancer break his foot due to a combination of factors, one of which was that no one had factored in how little time he actually had to make his cross. That experience taught me that part of the job is to be aware of more than just placement on stage, but also offstage movement as well.
