The Green Room / Peter Pan Live
« on: Dec 05, 2014, 09:33 am »
Given the overall theatrical....let's call it specialized attention from last year's Sound of Music Live, I'm a little surprised no one broached this subject yet.

Once again NBC created a cultural event for hate watching. My facebook feed said it all. "Who dressed these people?" "Wonder who's news anchor is the father of Tiger Lily?" "Walken is horrible" and more. I can't help but feeling that this is the same nonsense we heard about from 3 years ago (or so) about the actress who tore apart Into The Woods production and everyone destroyed her for it. There was a cry of "we're all in this together" and "if you can't be supportive, don't say anything about your fellow actors." How are these live performances of musicals any different? Also, how is it that no one reviewing these shows online understand that both the Sound of Music and Peter Pan were also live stage musicals and that's what these are based off and not a movie.

So did anyone watch it? Opinions? Am I entirely off base in thinking these musicals deserve more support from theater workers? Should they become a new holiday tradition?

I've heard rumors of a new distribution apparatus for them so this could become more widely available soon.

We're planning on bringing one into my office to test it out. They're back ordered for a while but I'll let everyone know how it works once we get it. I've already heard some good and also not so great things about it.

Tools of the Trade / Re: Use of lighter on stage
« on: Sep 30, 2014, 07:43 am »
It could also be as simple as turn the actors upstage. Real people don't always face the same wall after all.

Look at City Theatrical and their flicker candles. They sell them as a chip set outside of the candle form factor. The big trick would be hiding the power supply and switch in a zippo. I've tried to make LED matches before for the same reason but it's hard. Any chance your production would be willing to swap them for more lighters?

I wish when I performed in this show we had the no open flame rule. I was Harrold and I ended up using a bic lighter for the end of the show when he comes back in all irate. Did you know that On that sticker everyone ignores on a lighter contains a warning that these shouldn't be used for more than 30 seconds at a time or it may lead to severe burns? Yeah...I had an imprint of the lighter on my thumb for a couple of months. It's hard to remember your lines as you're searing your flesh.

Introductions / Re: The Worst Questions

What do I do? I facilitate director's, actors and designers artwork as they express it to the audience.

How? Eh. You'd get bored if I explained it.

Tools of the Trade / Re: Cheap Spike Tape?
« on: Sep 22, 2014, 11:27 am »
There are some companies that are National...yet oddly local. Like...mine for instance. I won't advertise but if you find a distributor you like, they'll make it work for you even on tour. They can arrange to hit you at your next venue etc etc.

You may be better off trying to use a papertape that film crews use. It's closer to masking tape and won't pull paint off the floor.

The trade off is it will get wrecked extremely fast so you'd need to take down a master spike list or something and probably have to reapply it. May I ask why it's not an option to repaint following the removal of the spike tape?

I'm not a doctor. I'm not obligated to follow HIPAA Laws!!!

I always disliked when situations come up like this. If it's important enough I need to keep track of it, it should be important enough you tell your employer so they can confront challenges and be prepared.

Remember, Stage managers are essentially middle management. If either of these actors tell you something, end up being injured or otherwise incapacitated in a manner they mentioned could happen but you didn't tell anyone about it....what does that do for your potential future employment opportunities? At what point do you need to remove yourself as the party who could end up on the receiving end of a law suit? If an actor tells me they have a pacemaker but don't want me to tell anyone about it, i'd probably say it's best that you tell a company manager or producer. It's a legal issue to me. I'd much prefer to not be involved.

Stage Management: Other / Re: Shipping a Marley Floor
« on: Jul 18, 2014, 10:37 am »
Never said they were the best. Just the most common and they are the most easily accessible to most of us.  That's also why I suggested the local companies because they will almost definitely be cheaper but I can't recommend which one to use since I don't know who works in EzBrEzPSM's area. Also for the multitude of reasons you listed why using a national company for a "local" delivery makes little sense.

I don't have recommendations in terms of a specific company but you need to figure out the weight and dimensions of your floor for shipping. After that call as many companies as possible and get quotes. FedEx, ups, and Radiant shipping are the most common. There are bound to be local freight companies. You'll also have to know if the delivery location needs a lift gate or of they have a loading dock.

All the companies have pros and cons. I'd go by the price you get.

The Green Room / Re: Mini Rant---SM T-shirts and products
« on: Jun 16, 2014, 05:16 pm »
I have a couple pieces of SM gear but as previously mentioned by others, they were gifts. Now, my wife who bought them for me is smart enough to not get anything horribly offensive. One of them became my favorite tech week T-shirt and it said "I'll sleep when we're open."

Not even SM related. It brings about unity as we're all frappin' tired. The other one was the Stage Manager's prayer and I got that more because I'm a crabby paddy and it ends with a line about how I should be able to hide bodies where no one can find them. But that's a poster and I would never bring that to work with me.

The Green Room / Re: ARTICLE: Tony Awards Cutting 2 Trophies
« on: Jun 12, 2014, 04:36 pm »
I know it's an unoriginal thought (because everyone and their mother has already said it), but I would LOVE a sound designer protest where they just cut the mics on the Tony Awards next year.

And just when I was getting into the Tony's again...might have to go back to boycotting them again.
