Your finger nails and cuticles resemble the Sahara Desert they are so dried out from spike tape.

I have never had to call spots before, but I have been a spot operator for several concerts.  Since I have never seen the concert I am about to do, I rely on whatever information the light board op gives us.  Sometimes it is extremely basic and we won't hear anything from him except who to follow and cues for blackouts.  Other times, there are more precise cues and the board op usually comes on headset and explains about 5 minutes before the cue happens, such as where abouts on the stage we're picking up next, what color gel, the size, speed, etc.  I don't remember ever having a cue sheet, but then, concerts are different animals than musicals.

Split from topic SHOWS:  Peter Pan http://smnetwork.org/forum/index.php/topic,3360.0.html -Rebbe

Also, with a permanent install, you're restricted to only flying people the way the system was set up for - which would quickly get pretty boring and I suspect you would end up flying people just because you can, rather than because the show really does call for it.  Much better to hire a flying rig that is spec'ed for the show you're doing and tailored to the needs of the show, rather than only being able to fly them in one way.

If you buy the system that he is talking to Dr. Hall about, The "DAT" System, it pays for itself quick.  It is also configurable to over 30 different effects.  As well as shift on the fly mechanical advantage.  Once you buy this system you can do everything from Peter pan to Dracula and everything in between.  Also, you can give a repair and maintenance contract to the flying company and they will make all the fixes.  And if you use Hall Associates, they are really cool about helping you out.  I also recommend going to NAAFED (North American Association for Flying Effects Directors)  Its a 2-3 day rigging seminar for flying effects equipment.  They get flying directors from all over to teach how to rig flying effects and choreography.  If you have any questions on it call 1-888-FLY-HALL

I wanted to revive a portion of this thread as I am currently researching which will be better for our theater: purchasing equipment to fly people or renting it.

I know next to nothing when it comes to flying people, except that you must have the proper equipment and trained operators and performers so it is as safe as possible.  Our director is interested in looking into this since we are doing 3 shows with flying in the next 12 months.  I have searched and come up with a list of what seems to be good companies and given that list to him (Foy, Fisher Technical, Hal Associates and ZFX).  But I wanted to ask you guys 1. if there were any others we should be looking at and 2. if anyone has anything to add to what has been said when you consider purchasing this equipment instead of renting.

At this point we are looking at a fixed track system.  The shows we have coming up are The Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan, and an Easter production (which may become an annual or bi-annual event).  We are located in North Carolina, though most companies seem to be more than willing to travel to you so that probably isn't a factor.

I look forward to reading whatever tidbits of wisdom y'all throw my way.  Thank you!

Geography?!?  What a horrible way to start a Monday morning.   :'(   (Perhaps less so if I actually knew any of the answers ;)

And besides the expected, "I never get to see yooooou!" whining on tech weeks, he never did.

I am getting married in July and my fiancé is a school teacher.  He also acts with the community theatre and often we are involved in the same productions.  I find, however, that he does far better with the crazy hours I put in to tech week than I do.  This last show it was me saying, "I never get to see yoooou!" and having the emotional melt down.

How about using grape juice?  It comes in both white and red.

The other thing, is permanent marker bleeds on most fabrics, so take that into consideration.

Today's quiz made me smile, because Chuck Negron from the group who sang the song in the first question (Joy to the World) was just at the theater where I heard him singing it 5 days ago.

I don't know about cleaning, but I remember when I took ballet we used to mop our marley floor with coke before a performance so it wouldn't be slick.

If registration causes more issues than logging in, what existing systems are there for SMs outside of university environments where normal folk would already have accounts & the habit of visiting?  Can those be utilized instead of reinventing the wheel with new websites every time?

What about a facebook group?  I've been experimenting with the idea, and it has a calendar you could use for rehearsals.  And if I understand it correctly, there are 3 levels of security so it's not open to everyone.  Also you can post notes that go into the member's news feed.

I don't know.  Like I said, I'm just starting to play with it.

The Green Room / Re: Snowed in in the South

Or... you could get snowed in for two days, and after having done all the housework on day one, settle into pre-prod paperwork for your next show on day two.

I'm stuck in the ice down south.  Can't even get down my driveway; I'm going stir crazy.  Hello, next show, two weeks early!

LOL...I only missed one day of work from the snow storm here in south western North Carolina (hooray for Subaru all-wheel drive!).  But the schools here have been cancelled possibly for the whole week - we're in the mountains so if you don't live in town you are stuck.

Definitely clean...and catch up on things I let slide during the show...do what I can to get ready for the next show (community theater - runs are typically 4 days and we put out 8-10 shows a year)...try to see my friends/family who aren't involved in the theater...attend a small group at my church (it's amazing the things that become impossible when you do not have evenings free)...exercise!...find new recipes...and for now, plan my wedding!  :)

Today's quiz - um - wow.  I am embarrassed to say the only one i knew the answer to was the one about the Bb scale.  I was totally guessing on the rest.  But looking at the score board, it seems a lot of people had a tough time with this one, which makes me feel slightly better.
