Self-Promotion / Re: Weird life transition
« on: Aug 16, 2016, 02:33 pm »
Listen, after 12 years of being a resident something at regional theaters, jumping into the freelance world at the age of 40 was simply the best career/life decision I could have made.  All of a sudden I was able to pick and choose projects based on my wants, needs, career goals.  Yes, my pocket book hurt for a bit . . . but I think I have sort of ended up okay.  You need to bet big to win big.

well, when it ceases to be safe . . .

if the deputy says we aren't doing it . . .

these are all times to get AEA and your GM in involved.

So late to this party - but I actually thinking being a ALD would be more beneficial as a stage manager since you are the one performing the lighting designer's cues in the show.  Being in the LD corner, having that experience, is invaluable, since he is the one designer who has to do his job LIVE, and having as much support as possible would be great.

End of the day - you should do all.  But if only had to do one, I would have voted lighting.

The Green Room / Re: Health Realted Issue
« on: Jul 19, 2016, 03:02 pm »
Listen, my education is, due to basic HIPPA laws, I can not tell anyone anyone's personal health issues.

If this is a workplace injury, yes, that can be shared - although treatment or non-treatment is not.

But other then that, it's a individually identifiable health information that needs to remain private - and all I can do is encourage the individual to share the information with all the interested parties themselves.

Think, I tell my company manager I have cancer, my company manager tells the Director, the Director then tells other people, and all of a sudden my career is tanked, because no one wants to hire a PSM who has cancer.  By telling other people, you might be putting yourself in a litigious situation.

But, I am wondering how far off center I am with these beliefs.

[I do not have Cancer]

The Green Room / Health Realted Issue
« on: Jul 14, 2016, 01:40 pm »
A performer comes to you and tells you a health related issue . . . but asks you not to tell anyone else.

Besides encouraging them to tell others (director, producer, etc) - what else is there to do?

The Green Room / ARTICLE: Life of a swing

I have to say, that before my current show, the notion of swing was not familiar to me . . .

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: Simultaneous Shows ?!?
« on: Jul 02, 2016, 08:43 pm »
Fefu and Friends is sort of like this as well - everyone is together for act 1; and then you split up and watch four scenes in different order - but all interconnected - and then everyone comes together.

You need to keep very accurate timelines, time the journey from one space to the next space, and make sure you have communication to the other show.  The details are going to be in how the two shows married.

You will most likely tech one, tech the other and then tech both together - so make sure you have enough tech time to make sure they blend together.

What's great about the business is we can constantly reinvent ourselves . . . and when doors close, windows open . . .

The Green Room / New Challanges
« on: Jun 26, 2016, 01:32 pm »
So, I have been on the road almost a year with LION KING . . . hard to believe.

But, there are new projects on the horizon - I am able to take a 9 week LOA, and I am off to Tokyo to be the Associate Director and Associate Production Supervisor for Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame.  This means, I go for four weeks and direct the musical at the Shiki Theatre in Tokyo https://www.shiki.jp/applause/notredame/special/release/.  Oddly this means the first musical I will ever "direct" (and it really is to recreate the former staging) is in a foreign language . . .  so, jumping in with two feet.  Honored that Disney is allowing me this wonderful opportunity.  End of the day, you never know where the road will take you . ..

I will miss the Pridelands for bit, but I will be back in time for the Holidays.

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: Rail cues

Find out . . . often, rail is on cue light for a wide variety of reasons.

On busy shows, I wouldn't have time to call the direction.

Well, the first thing you could have done was sign a contract that actually reflected the dates you planned on working.

And then you should have asked for a weekly salary based on that.

500.00 for the first part of the show, paid as $100.00 a week.

It's hard when working non-union because you don't have the union backing you up.
