Tools of the Trade / Notebook for Mac
« on: Mar 21, 2007, 02:24 am »
So I was just reading about this software called Notebook for Mac. Has anyone used this before? If it works the way it looks, it would be a great way to have an electronic "book" with the tabs and everything. Any thoughts?

College and Graduate Studies / Re: NC School of the Arts
« on: Mar 19, 2007, 08:57 pm »
NCSA does not have a graduate program in Stage Management, but they do have an undergraduate program. I also have known many people who went to undergrad at NCSA in Production (LD, TD, SMs). The SM I knew had to miss graduation because she was an ASM on the non-equity tour of Oliver at the time. She said that was not uncommon and she was not the only one. The NCSA kids (and I mean no offense by the term kids) are a very tight group and look out for each other.

A courtesy tab need not be all that big, so it really isn't a waste of tape, but it will save you time when trying to pull it off...

SMNetwork Archives / USITT Conference
« on: Feb 23, 2007, 06:18 pm »
Is anyone here going to the USITT Conference? This is going to be my first time going and I'm not sure what to expect. I'm also debating whether or not to sign-up for the Management PDW, but haven't decided. Is anyone else taking that PDW?

*Edit by nmno - seeing as how the conference has passed, I'm locking the topic.

Employment / Re: Where and How to look for jobs
« on: Feb 23, 2007, 03:57 pm »
Hey Julie,

Where in Az are you? USITT will be in Phoenix in a couple of weeks and that is a great way to place to meet people and you can also sign up for some sort of job-search type thing. I'm in Phoenix and there is lots of theatre around, just keep looking.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: Paying for parking
« on: Jan 28, 2007, 11:44 pm »
I realize this may not be much comfort, but 10 dollars a day is not too horrible to pay for parking. It's true it sucks to pay for parking but think of it as an investment in your future. And remember you don't want to burn any bridges. EVER! This theatre world is all too small and its really not worth it.

SMNetwork Archives / Re: Great Online Software

I tried it at the beginning of the season and didn't have a very good response. I couldn't put in info for the Production calendar and had trouble with multiple shows. It sounded like a good idea, but didn't really work out for me. If anyone had a positive experience I'd love to hear about them.

The Hardline / New SPT Agreement
« on: Jan 18, 2007, 01:46 pm »
I'm a rather new member of AEA, so please forgive me if this sounds like a silly question...

Since the current SPT agreement is up at the beginning of June of this year when will the new SPT agreement come out?

Also, since SPT is not an association like LORT. RMTA, The League, etc. How does that agreement get negotiated? Do theatres currently on an SPT agreement have any input?

SMNetwork Archives / Re: Printers
« on: Jan 16, 2007, 05:02 pm »
I have a Canon ip90 with a battery and bluetooth. It turned out to be a little expensive after all the added stuff, but I think it's totally worth it. It is really small, prints relatively fast and is a photo printer. I highly recommend it. I bought mine refurbished, have had it for two years and have had no troubles!

The Hardline / Re: LOA-NYC Rulebook?
« on: Jan 09, 2007, 05:58 pm »
I got this from the Equity website. Hope this helps.

"Referenced to the Off-Broadway Agreement and limited to theatres of not more than 199 seats, the New York City Letter of Agreement (LOA-NYC) is specifically designated for use by seasonal, non-profit theatre companies.

Although the terms and work rules of the LOA-NYC are established, the weekly minimum salaries are individually negotiated between Equity and the theatre companies. Approximately twenty New York City theatre companies use the LOA-NYC."

The Hardline / John Holly Retires
« on: Nov 22, 2006, 02:05 pm »
So I was reading the Equity website this morning and found out that John Holly, the Western Region Director of Equity is retiring at the end of the month. So I was wondering what happens next? What is the process and timeline for selecting a new Region Director? etc. Thanks.

The Hardline / Re: EMC pay as an ASM
« on: Oct 13, 2006, 07:36 pm »
I work at an SPT 5 and we pay 100/wk for our ASMs regardless of EMC status. A lot of the times our ASMs will also do props, or other production type work to make some extra $.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: The Ultimate Decision
« on: Oct 03, 2006, 05:09 pm »
I decided to study theatre because I figured I was going to school for four years, so I might as well do something fun. When I was in High School I had been in the drama club and it was fun, so I figured it would also be fun in college.

My first semester I went to the Director of the first show because I heard they needed ASMs, so I went to his office and told him I had been a SM in HS, which was technically true, I had the title of SM for a showcase in High School once...

So anyway, I became the ASM for Don Juan and the SM had to explain everything to me. He was really nice about my not knowing anything. After that I worked with him a couple more times, then other people started asking me to do a show here and there. One day as I was working in the box office for my theatre, when the SM told our Producer he was not coming back next season. She asked me if I wanted the job and I said yes.

REI, Dick's and other sporting goods stores always carry them and different types also. Also try the knife store at the mall.
