Students and Novice Stage Managers / Stage Management Survey
« on: Oct 17, 2018, 02:13 am »
Hello All,

I am trying to make an anonymous survey that the cast, crew, and design team completes regarding the Stage Management Team and if they have any criticisms or ways to improve. Does anyone have any suggestions for what I should be asking?

Thanks in advance for your support!

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: Line Runs
« on: Sep 18, 2018, 06:16 pm »
Any advice for running a rehearsal to help actors learn lines during the first week?

Usually in a professional production that wouldn't be an issue in terms of bulk memorizing of lines. The most common way of assisting the cast, in terms of a play, perfect their memorization of the script would be to make line notes and send them individually to each actor each day. In an academic setting,  if it is a high school for example the first off-book date could be just like a read through without scripts in everyone's hands and you conduct line notes off of that as a preliminary.

Something important to note is that integrity is key. You showed great poise by being upfront and honest by saying you had previous commitments. Additionally, because it was a volunteer position I believe it wasn't to much to ask for a 2 week delay before rendering your decision.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: My first prompt book
« on: Sep 14, 2017, 11:35 pm »
I could never imagine doing a show without a prompt book. Firstly, the prompt book needs to be assembled for the show in the event an ASM or somebody outside of the SM team needs to fill in, in the event of an emergency. Secondly, it is the central location of all information regarding the production which allows quick access to accurate answers directly recorded by the SM. Thirdly, on a more personal note, in my opinion the SM should know everything that happens on stage at all times throughout the show which includes: lighting cues, transitions, blocking, directorial notes, etc. I personally would forget things if i did not write it down on a sticky note and put it on my prompt book. I highly encourage you to get into the habit of using one as I have found it is the most helpful tool in the Stage Manager's arsenal.

If I may offer my opinion, I think that you made the best decision you could have with the cards you were dealt. You should not be in an environment were those who you look to for knowledge do not support the fact that you are looking to hone you craft. Additionally, from my understanding, both as a student and intern asking similar questions to professionals, Uni's purpose is to give you experience working as an SM through all levels of the hierarchy. At this point, for you, it is just about building contacts to break into the theater scene in your area; which you would have had to do either way. I wish you the best of luck, Arturo F.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Stage Manager Duties
« on: Sep 14, 2017, 10:59 pm »
Hello, my name is Arturo Fernandez, jr and I am the current PSM of my school's show. I have been told by the director that I am the swing for the three leading roles in the show. I was wondering if this is standard in the professional world? Thanks in advance for your time.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Collage Auditions
« on: Feb 06, 2017, 11:16 pm »
As I look into the future I try to see which collages are acceptable for an aspiring SM; however, I realized if I want to get a B.F.A. in this I need to, most likely audition. However, I have no clue what I am suppose to do in an audition of this nature other than possibly bring a prompt book I have made? Any advice?
