The Green Room / Re: Weird Dreams
« on: Jan 09, 2014, 10:51 am »
I've had a weird dream lately. I was dragged into a production, but I didn't want to act. I tried to walk out quietly, but the stairs were so loud that everyone noticed, and then I started running. I tried to run, but the stairs became like a roller coaster. I eventually ran out, into the street, trying to get to someone that I knew.

Introductions / Greetings from an SM
« on: Oct 07, 2013, 05:24 pm »
Hello, I'm SMBen, a stage manager of 1 month, ASM of 4 months. I got into the trade when my theater teacher recruited me to be an ASM. After the production of Les Mis and a busy summer, I became co-stage manager. Since she hasn't shown up to enough rehearsals, I'm the solo stage manager with my trusty ASM, and we rock the theater of the upper midwest. I hope to make a lot of friends, and learn a lot about the trade!

Tools of the Trade / Best Place To Buy Gaff/Spike Tape?

Where are the best places to buy gaff/spike tape? Which places have the best prices?

I would tell the superintendent that we should wait to cancel the show until we know that there is absolutely no chance of finding a substitute director. I would then post an ad, and tell the principal of the school and all other teachers that we need someone with directing experience who can step in and give feedback. While my ASM and I try to fill everything as best we can, we will need someone to clear set changes and be our safety net. If this proves impossible, I would talk to the superintendent and principal, telling them that we need to move the show to a later date. If this is denied, we will cancel the show.

ASMs have many jobs, here are some that my ASM has:
Print and Copy Scripts, make prop lists, make prop tables, keep updated schedules, communicate about provided meals, collect money for fundraisers, help with dry tech, assist scene changes manage stage crew and actors.
Hope this helps.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: Rehearsals: Be quiet!
« on: Oct 07, 2013, 02:48 pm »
Don't be afraid to say: let's quiet down! One of the hardest (and best) parts of our job is to take control. When the director needs quiet, it is your job to make it happen. Even if they give you attitude, remember: you're the stage manager. You practically run the whole freaking show.
Good Luck!
