As much as I agree about censorship and that we try to shelter young people WAY too much from all these things, I couldn't allow them to perform this version of the show without the director's approval, as well as the school. It could get them AND me in trouble with not only the director, but also school officials and possibly members of the local board of education. I would probably suggest everyone comes to the theater early or something to do that version of the show for themselves, but there is no way I would be a part of the group going against the director's wishes, as well as the school's.

College and Graduate Studies / Re: Stage Management Colleges

I don't know much about VA or the area/schools or what you're looking for exactly, but I did seriously considering applying to Virginia Commonwealth University after receiving emails about their stage management program and talking to some people there. I don't know if you've already looked into or considered the school or anything, just a suggestion.

Here is their website & stage management page: http://arts.vcu.edu/theatre/apply-now/programs/bfa-studio-management/ You'd have to contact the school or something for more information but it seems pretty nice.

Hope you find what you're looking for, whatever that may be!

Thank you Maribeth! Those were really helpful, and the thread you mentioned helped me a lot with coming up with questions. I'm going to meet with the Technical Director tomorrow and it's safe to say I'm prepared!

Hey Eric,

I'm a senior stage management student in the technical production program at UNC Greensboro.  I would be more than happy to answer any of your questions about the program, the university and the area in general if you send me a PM. The questions that Maribeth brought up are definitely good ones.

Thank you so much! If I still have any questions after my visit tomorrow or if any pop up, I'll definitely send them to you. :)

College and Graduate Studies / Questions for college interview
« on: Feb 24, 2013, 08:12 pm »
So, later this week, I'm going to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro for a campus tour and an interview with representatives from the theatre department. I am hoping to go to UNCG this fall (application still pending!) and enter in the school's Technical Production program, designed for people going into design and technical theatre and intend to pursue it professionally or in grad school. Stage management is listed in the program description, but other than that there isn't much information about stage management students, which is why I scheduled an interview with people from the program. My plan is to find out as much information as I can about the program and how it will help me in preparing for a career in stage management professionally, post-graduation.

I know that to get into the Technical Production program, I'll have to do an interview this fall and submit a prompt book as a portfolio. I also know that I'll have internship opportunities at the local professional theatre, but I don't know much about requirements to get into the program, what kind of assignments I'll be given for the school's productions through the program, what kind of things I'll need to do for completion of the program, etc.

I've started to compile a list of questions to ask the school's representatives when I speak to them this week, but my mind is starting to draw blanks about what I may want/need to know and ask about. Which is why I'm posting this. What kind of questions would you suggest I ask, and what might I need to find out about the school? Any suggestions/tips/general advice would be greatly appreciated. I really want to get the most I can out of this interview before I set in stone that this is what I will be doing for my education. :)

Introductions / Re: High school stage manager, craving to learn
« on: Jul 04, 2012, 06:17 am »
Thanks you guys! I intend to do a whole lot of research before school starts this year, as well as during the school year. My theatre teacher has explained a lot to me about the difference in what I do here and what stage managers do in the professional world. I'll definitely check out the threads you guys mentioned. I really want to learn as much as I can.

Introductions / High school stage manager, craving to learn
« on: Jul 03, 2012, 05:52 am »
Hey everyone! I'm Eric, a 17-year-old high school senior located in a very small town in North Carolina.

Ever since I was in middle school I was obsessed with acting. It was all I wanted to do, even though I always helped with organization and crew work. When I was a sophomore, I ended up writing my school's spring production, starring in it, designing all the costumes for it, organizing EVERYTHING for it, and working on stage management-type stuff more than the stage managers did. That was when I became fascinated with stage management. My good friend Sami had been my school's stage manager since she was a sophomore, so I learned a lot about it from her. Being so dedicated to stage managing (and theatre in general) is really hard in my school, since there are about five people total who even understand what a stage manager does, and a very small amount of people who care about theatre at all (I'm seriously the only person who actually wants to make a career in theatre at this point in time - with the exception of my sister, who is starting her freshman year as I start my senior year.

This past year, I stage managed our school's productions and I am planning to stage manage the productions this coming year (My last year of high school!). I've got a few colleges planned for the future but I'm heavily hoping for East Carolina University, which offers a concentration on stage management. I've realized that this is what I want to do for the rest of my life (along with play writing on the side), and I am so eager to learn and work as much as I can!

I really hope to learn a lot from everyone here (I've already found a bunch of great stuff to use next year on the Forms page) and maybe pass on advice given to me from others and things I've learned in my experience so far.
