Hello SM friends!

I couldn't find another topic about this, so I thought I'd start my own.

How do you keep yourself busy backstage as an ASM on a show with few cues? It's a fairly long run.

Edited to add topic tag- Maribeth

The Green Room / Re: Your First Theater Crush

My grandma started taking me to see TYA shows when I was quite little, and I was always enthralled. It was something about the immediacy of it, I just loved it.

Then I saw Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at a local theatre when I was about 11, and I fell in love. I wanted to do that! I became obsessed with the show. I saw it multiple times, and owned the recorded version on VHS. I watched it so many times, the tape wore out.

I acted in church plays through middle school, and then auditioned for the mainstage theatre production in my first semester of high school. When I wasn't cast, the teacher asked if I'd be interested in being part of the show in another way. And that was my first time on a running crew. I stepped up to ASM the next semester, and I have never looked back.

I had another one not too long ago about my current show.

I dreamt that the director/adaptor came in on the second day of tech in an amazing mood. He was so excited and was telling everyone that he had had a revelation about how to make the show perfect. It was the only thing it was missing, and he had found it.

What would make the show absolutely shine would be to do it in Spanish.

In the dream, the actors casually chimed in "but... we don't speak Spanish". The director said it didn't matter. Fake it til you make it.

It was so odd, and vivid.

The director/producer is completely out of line. I'd bail.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: Rehearsals: Be quiet!
« on: Oct 17, 2013, 06:19 pm »
My usual tactic is a firm "GUYS!..." (Wait for the chatter to stop) "Thank you!" accompanied by raising my arm in the air.

I am completely onboard with kicking people out of the room. If you're not needed in this scene, you can hang out as long as you're quiet and respectful. If someone causes a ruckus, I ask them to leave the room and I will come get them when we need them.

I'm actually about to do a show with sand... Oh joy. In a tiny black box space with painted black concrete floors.

I think the desk-bed should become standard in SM offices :)

The Green Room / Re: On Reviews

I do. I, of course, don't talk about them in the vicinity of the theatre.

I worked with an actor who didn't want to hear about any press, not even preview articles, and respectfully asked that there be no newspapers backstage.

We have a blog/radio reviewer here that is particularly grumpy, and I find her entertaining. She likes very little.

10) Please don't force me to treat you like a kid (even though you aren't one). Please actively listen, behave like a professional and cooperate with me when I ask you to do something/not to do something. Most things I say to you have intention, I appreciate when you give me the time of day.

I recently realized just how often I say "Thank you" or "Thanks".

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: SHOWS: RED canvas tips
« on: Apr 15, 2013, 12:08 am »
It appears as if we will be using canvas drop cloths stretched over the frame, and the sides pre-stapled by the props department daily. The actor will be stapling the corners.

So, canvas drop cloth. That may be just for rehearsal purposes, but we have painted twice, and it seems to work well.

The Green Room / Re: Sleeping in your theatre
« on: Mar 19, 2013, 04:36 pm »
I did a show a few years ago with a very comfy bed on the set.  The actors and I would alternate who would get the bed at which times.  It was fantastic.

Otherwise, I have the talent of being able to sleep just about anywhere, as long as it's kind of soft, or at least carpeted, dark-ish and mostly quiet.

I have never slept on an equity cot, the actors stake claim on those most of the time.

I almost always have show dreams during a run, though the worse it's going the more dreams I have, which I suppose makes tons of sense.  I don't tend to dream about theatre when I'm not working a show, but I did once have one where Sharpies were growing in my garden... That was odd.

I had one where the Artistic Director sat everyone down and told us that they had accidentally oversold the week and that we would have to do a three show day (of this 2 hour, 40 minute show) on Saturday that week. In the dream, everyone was livid and then threatened a strike. It was a freakishly vivid dream.

I have had a few dreams on different shows where we get to the theatre and a large, pivotal set piece is missing and no one knows why or where it went.

And then when I was in university, I had a dream that the all-female cast of the show I was ASMing had gone behind our backs and decided to go out for the curtain call naked on closing night, and for some reason it was entirely my fault and I got expelled.

Yup, I frequently show dream.  Those are only a couple of them.

The Green Room / Re: "I quit!"
« on: Mar 04, 2013, 02:10 am »
I frequently thought about quitting my first professional post-college gig. Mostly because of being mistreated by an actor, and watching others in the company be treated much worse than I was by this same actor, despite numerous attempts to rectify it.

I looked up flights home almost every day, but I stuck it out.  In hindsight, I'm glad I did.
