Tools of the Trade / Steel toe boots?
« on: Apr 23, 2017, 09:16 am »
Hi guys,

I'll be making a long distance move this summer to start a stage management apprenticeship in Chicago, and I'm wondering if it's worth shifting my steel toed safety boots. I'm graduating uni, and I bought them when I was doing a lot more tech work. Since I've shifted back to 100% stage management I haven't really used them that much and they're just gathering dust at the back of my closet.

As a (very) early career, non-union SM, is it worth keeping them to be prepared to work load-ins/-outs/rigs/etc?

Thanks for any advice!

What sort of problem are we talking about? A fire, a person, an explosion? Are we evacuating the entire building? For the two during the production, should we consider the audience our responsibility, or just cast and crew?

This is actually really important... I've never thought about it before despite how old and decrepit my school's theatre is.

I am a black belt in Tang Soo Do (it's Korean, and similar to Tae Kwan Do). My instructor focuses a lot on the traditional forms, which are really soothing for me.

I voted, but my internship was designed for high school students (I am one), with a VERY small stipend (not meant to support living on one's own) - it was $500 for a six week production, which worked out to significantly less than $1/ hour.

My resolution is to try to improve my time management and self-discipline, specifically with regards to homework.

And @Matthew: hehehehe... oh, Calvin.

Thanks, Matthew. It's a good reminder that we all need to hear every once in a while.  :)

Thank You Blank Syndrome:
           n. 1)The tendency of stage managers to both give and expect Thank You Blank style acknowledgments to any sort of news given.
2)The tendency of stage managers to thank everyone around them for everything. (Addendum: If you don't get thanked by a stage manager for doing something, you've managed to really, really screw something up)

Maybe that second one is just me, but I find that with high school actors, saying thank you for everything, rather than diminishing the sentiment, actually increases general goodwill and soothes egos that could otherwise become problematic.

Stage Management: Other / Re: Backstage at the Nutcracker

My elementary school did a musical every year. My friends were always in the shows, and they would complain constantly about the director and the guy who probably filled the role of stage manager (though that wasn't his official title). I recently saw the director in the lobby of our local community theatre during the intermission of a show there. He said "yeah, we've got ninety of them this year".

And suddenly, removed from my friends and for the first time with the context of stage management, I nearly broke down into tears on his behalf. Ninety kids? 9-0? I would actually die. I can't imagine how the poor man does it.

As far as the video, coming from a teenager on the internet, the only surprising thing about it is the quality - they usually aren't that good/ are farther away. It is, of course, illegal, but I would be surprised if anyone was actually surprised.

These injuries are getting concerning, though. I mean, fly cables are one thing, but safety cables are another entirely. It's unfortunate, but I can't help thinking that "human error" means someone worried about fly cables forgot to check safety cables. It's a terrible situation, and my heart goes out the the management team and the actors. It's got to be taking a toll on their nerves at this point. The traditional "break a leg" sounds significantly more awkward now that usual.

Yeah, that is definitely creepy. It still strikes me as odd that no one has mentioned why the father was not approached before the actress was fired. It would make the director/company's case look much stronger if they said "We warned him, we asked him to leave, we told him to leave, he wouldn't/ she wouldn't let him, so we fired her."

Smart Sofa: The sofa's worth of actors who intelligently scheduled nothing that conflicts with rehearsals (Antonyms: Dumb Sofa, Stupid Sofa (depending on how alliterative you're feeling))

I'm asking Santa for a multi-tool this year, Leatherman or Gerber. It'll be my first.

Congratulations! It's a great feeling to pull a show together and watch people enjoy it - from both sides of the footlights. I'm glad that it went well, I remember you had some concerns about the read-through. I'm glad that everything worked out well!

At the end of my last show, one of the actors got the crew a cake, and everyone else in the cast gave my ASM and I hugs and thank yous. Some of them are in the one-acts I'm stage managing now. The rehearsals are mostly during the school day, so during the first rehearsal I was at, the director pointed me out to the cast, and the kids from the last show cheered. It made me really, really happy.
