Students and Novice Stage Managers / ALL-STATE AUDITIONS...i cant spell...

ok so anyways, i'm auditioning to be a stage manager for the Illinois all-state production of hairspray. the guy said not to bring a port but instead to bring in exsamples of what i can do. so i have a few questions on what he might mean-
1) whats the diffrens between what he wants and a portfolio
2) is it alright for me to pretend i was dong a show but not actually do it...let me clearify... sence my TD already has the sceanse designed could i just pick a dif. show that my school wasnt doing and then design a set for it even though i wouldnt build it, or do a lighting plot for it? idk if it makes sense to yo guys but if not then just ignore this last question. -.-'
