Tools of the Trade / Re: Headset Side
« on: Apr 07, 2008, 09:39 am »
For me it kind depends, if I have people that are going to talk to me not through the headset, I have my open ear to them. I've also been known to switch which side my headset is on if my ear gets too hot. One of the more deciding factors I've also noticed is which side is the headset already set up for, if the person before me had it on their right then I wear it on my right, if it was on their left then I wear it on my left.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: Rules on Cans

If there is a slow spot with not that many cues, I don't mind people talking, but as soon as my voice is heard, all talking stops right then, even if that means mid word.
Don't say something about some one that you wouldn't say to their face, you never know who maybe listening.
Please try to remember to turn your mike off when not using, especially when eating.

though it may seem counterintuitive you may want to try sticking down more mylar tape and then taking it up (like leaving it for only a few seconds) that sometimes works.

The Hardline / Re: Who Locks Your Doors?
« on: Jan 25, 2008, 11:43 pm »
The last few shows I've worked on, it was stage managements job to lock the whole place up during rehearsals, and then once shows started the SMs took care of the back stage and House management took care of the lobby side.

One of my friends was telling me that a show he worked on had plant in the audience and during the live preshow announcement, their cell phone would ring, then they would get surrounded by ushers who would take the plants phone, bring it on stage and smash it with a hammer.

If you can I would suggest trying to get a lithium Ion battery for which ever brand you get, though I suggest either Dewalt or Makita. It might cost more to the the Lithium battery, but it does last longer between charges, and also you don't have to worry about the battery's memory, you can charge it no matter how low it is on power and you wont lose the max charge. I just purchased an 18v Makita with the Lithium Ion battery. It's really nice cause it weights about the same as a 12v but has the power of the 18v, and it has a light on it which is really useful for working in dark spaces. but that's my opinion.

OK... since I'm about to start rehearsing that show, I hope that doesn't happen to me... especially since I can see all but the tornado part happening...

I would go with a Leatherman, size is up to you, but I would definitely go with one with pliers and not the small ones with scissors instead. I do use the screw drivers and the knife quite a bit, but I prefer to use a normal screwdriver when I can just because they are easier.

As for the size that's good for you, that is something you need to figure out, will you actually need four different screwdrivers, a bottle opener, 2 knives, a saw and scissors. My main reason for having the bigger one is that I use it in my scouting career as well, and not just in theatre...

SMNetwork Archives / Re: Happy Stage Management Memories?
« on: Jun 11, 2007, 09:17 pm »
My happiest Stage Management moment would probably been while sming my first show, Measure for Measure. It was a small show that was a grad student's thesis. I had not really had that much experience, but was in the process of taking a  SM class, so I was learning what to do. But just being able to get through the whole run of the show with only a few small problems, and the praises I got from the cast and other friends/classmates who have had more experience as a SM just made me feel great.

Then also when I was ASMing Caucasian Chalk Circle, I had seen the show through out rehearsals, but not very much because I had to do various other things, and on one of the last days of tech when one of our actors was too ill and sent home, I had to step in doing his rough blocking, and reading the script. While I was doing this, the rest of the actors, would help me out being like he usually does this, or we do this really helped out and the fact that they said we should do the show with me instead of the actor, even though it was most definitely more in a joking manor just made me feel great

you are correct that the new LED mags wont fit the cases, but if you get the conversion kit for a normal mini mag, it doesn't add any extra length and still fits old cases
