The Green Room / Re: An eye for details?
« on: Dec 30, 2009, 09:36 pm »
I really like the second one. I watched it again a few times to see if the run crew slipped at any point; I didn't see any.

Thanks for the links.

A note about using sports drinks - most of them are way to concentrated to help rehydrate you. It is normally better to dilute them by half or drink a glass of water in between each glass of sports drink.

Tools of the Trade / Re: paint
« on: May 17, 2009, 06:04 pm »
Latex paints normally peal off of smooth surfaces (mirrors). If you need something that will wash off, is there some type of powder (chalk) that you could coat a wall with then wash off? Why do you need to wash it off: middle of the show trick, theater does not want the walls painted? Is washing off the paint the only way to accomplish what you need to accomplish? Could you cover everything with painted fabric? Have a white wall colored by colorblast (led wash lights that can project any color)?

You might want to consider if the crew/actors will listen to the person who is the SM.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: The Ultimate Decision
« on: Apr 06, 2009, 12:35 pm »
I think I just feel into theater. Though, I am not sure how it will fit into my life after I graduate. It started with a quarter long theater class in middle school, then a musical in high school. When I got to college, I had to do a project in Humanities and Arts and deiced that theater would be the most enjoyable. My first class had lab hours, so I spent time on set crew. The next term I was house manager until the ASM turn out to be unsuitable. They asked me to replace the ASM which eventually led to to SM for my HU&A project. After that I just stayed with theater and have had a blast doing it.

I know that is definitely possible to double major in science and theater. At my school (WPI.edu/+theatre) we have a few double major in theater and some engineering/science disciple. I chose a different route though. After I started my mechanical engineering degree and found out that I really enjoyed theater. As a result I will be graduating this spring with a theater minor.

In my opinion a school does not have to have a large program to have a good program. Despite having only two faculty, 10? students seeking a major/minor in theater and maybe 25? doing a project in theatre, we manage to put on 6 shows and a festival every school year. Each of these shows is almost or entirely run by students which makes it relatively easy to try new positions and take on more responsibility. Also being a tech school we like having lots of fun on the tech side of theater.

For example before I was officially seeking a minor in theater I was producer for Mojo and the Sayo. On a $800 budget we bought a car and smashed it through the wall every night. In addition we made sugar glass windows to be destroyed nightly. We would have lost money, except we sold the car. I have also been stage manager a few times just because I enjoy the job.

Sorry for talking up my school, I am just trying to illustrate a different way to go about getting a double major

The Green Room / Prompt Book
« on: Apr 06, 2009, 10:35 am »
For I class project I had to create a sample prompt book. I thought it might be useful for all the people who ask about them. It was created with a college level production at my school in mind; but the basic should work for everyone. The only issue with it is the files about 1.8mb so I can't upload it. If you want a copy PM me.

To the best of my knowledge the script (Miss Lulu Bett) is not under copyright and all the artistic work was done by me. This play was never in production, so all the kinks have not been worked out of the show.

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: The Chatty SM

I know when I have underlings(ASMs, ect..) I normally assign them specific duties; so you might check with the SM and ask for clarification of what your duties are. Or tell the SM that you are having difficulty taking blocking notes as well as keeping up with the line notes and ask for help.  These can be away to bring up the problem without accusing anyone of wrong doing (which is a good way to bring up a problem).

Other resources you might have: the producer, the mentor (to SMs), Alpha Psi Omega cast (if they are on campus), theater club leadership. These people normally have had enough experience to provide some good advice for the specific environment you are working in.

Tools of the Trade / Re: stage box
« on: Jan 19, 2009, 07:50 pm »
One avenue you might look down is Patrol or Chuck boxes. They are not exactly what you need becasue most take two people to move. This is due to their solid wood construction, their size, and all the cooking implements inside.

I also know in the past writing boxes were used as portable desks.

You might be able to combine some of these ideas with modern products and create a box uniquely suited to you.

It would be interesting to ask them what they think an SM's does during the show. This will give you an idea what they know, let you know what other areas/duties/task and SM does, and get them think.

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: Hell Week...?
« on: Oct 23, 2008, 08:35 am »
To play devil's advocate: hell week can be a useful term for some college theaters. It can sever as a warning to people that if they don't get their work done, both school and theater, this is going to be a tough week for them. There have been some shows where all I did was homework, theater, and class, and I barely kept up with the work I needed to do. I do understand that it is not always hell, but from my three years of experience there is almost always something that causes a problem for someone. It may not be the SM, there are other departments/people that could have a hard time.

SMNetwork Archives / Re: Multi-tool advice?
« on: Oct 02, 2008, 02:24 pm »
One thing to remember. I have never encounter a multi-tool that works as a tool meant for a single job. The multi-tool are great for quick fixes; however, at times you need to go and find a "real" tool.

With that said I have use a BuckTool 360 for many years and I have not had a problem with it. Although it feels a bit unsteady when I use a lot of torque with one of the screwdrivers.

.... when an actor noticed I was stressed out during our colleges production of Romeo and Juliet. He came and asked me how things were going (The joy of putting on a show in month during a seven week term taking 10.5 credits) and encouraged me to calm down.

I am at a tech school where computers are everywhere.

I am trying something new for our upcoming production of Romeo and Juliet. I have created a basic website with several sources of information: an RSS feed, a embedded Google calendar they can access, a list of contact information, and a page where they can download useful info. All the actors will still get reminder e-mails on the days of rehearsal. They also get a paper schedule at the beginning and I am thinking of making  business card with my info and important dates (thank you to this site for the idea).
So everyone gets the basic information, and access to useful information no matter where they are. The people who like to check things a lot and get tons of information they can do that. Those who don't want a lot get just that. We will see how it works and if I get sick of maintaining it soon.
