I know we don't say it enough, we get busy and focused on our personal lives, but thank you for what you've created here. There's nothing like SMNetwork out there anywhere, and it's all because I you.
THANK YOU!

Self-Promotion / Weird life transition
« on: Jun 30, 2016, 09:43 am »
This week I'm leaving the full-time job and going back to the freelance life I led back in 19-- while doing some traveling with the fiance's job on the weeks I don't have my son. Just finished three months of rehearsals and performances for Charlotte Squawks so I'm just now able to focus on getting the next gigs. After years of working I realized that, for me, several different types of work is better than one full-time job (reading "One Person/Multiple Careers" was helpful).
Not at the excited stage yet, but I'm hopeful  ;).

Employment / Re: Worst Job Offers?
« on: Jun 15, 2016, 10:59 am »
Wow. I have nothing half as bad as some of these stories.
The worst for me was when I was told by the Artistic Director that the play had three acts and two intermissions, and my first question was, "What is your run time?" I was told 2.5 hours with intermissions, which seemed reasonable. I was getting paid a fair rate, and I took it really to put some extra cash in my pocket and fill in a calendar gap.
Fast forward to tech and the first week of performances, and the show it clocking in between 3 hrs 15 mins to 3 hrs 45 mins (main reason: several parts of the play take place in an A.A. baptist church with a full choir, and the director had told the actor playing the choir director to just 'go with how you feel' when it came to the length of the songs). The Artistic Director was part of the show, and I kept telling him constantly that not only is it running over but the times are varying wildly. He shrugged it off.
That was the only time I felt way underpaid for the amount of time involved. But at least with only 54 cues to call I got a lot of reading done.

I started as the oldest but wound up the middle child in a blended family. #therapyneeded

Given in one year, I helped develope 7 new musicals at various stages, I am just not sure how this would be regulated . . . One of the shows that was in a very long incubation - has gone through 12 SMs.  And I was not able to do the most recent production.  Would everyone who ever did a reading or workshop get their fair percentage of a certain percent?

This coupled with Michelle's point about profit makes me think this won't become the standard. With $500,000/week in profits I can understand why the cast would see the opportunity to work towards a profit share arrangement, given the odds of a musical being that successful.

Employment / Re: Dubai Opera Job Postings

For any SMs looking for an adventure, Dubai Opera (opening soon) is hiring two stage management positions.  I have no affiliation with this organization and am posting solely as a courtesy to the members here.

While I don't see this becoming the trend with every B'way musical, I think it's a good move on the producers' part.

Do you think this will change how people associated with new works negotiate their contracts?

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: Mary Poppins HELP!

It's been a while since I've seen the show, but, is it possible that the flying could be subbed for projections of her shadow?

Like SMrose said, you did the right thing. No one can hold it against you that you may have to suddenly change your position based on a job that pays (I'm assuming the internship is paying?).

Employment / Re: Negotiating Rates
« on: Mar 30, 2016, 10:27 am »
Remember that your rate isn't the only thing you can negotiate. You can include a travel stipend, gas stipend, I think some SMs here have even negotiated boarding for their pets while they're out-of-town.

Do a web search for your name plus stage manager . . .

Does a web page with your email come up?  Anyway to contact you?

I came up pretty easily. But with a name like Dallas...
