The Hardline / Unions and Circus/Cirque
« on: Apr 02, 2013, 12:50 pm »
Hi,

I know this is an old thread but I am curious if about cirque.  I've seen many AEA Stage Managers who have worked for Cirque and I'm wondering how they're able to do that.  I've heard that cirque gives full benefits and I'd like to apply.  Does anyone have any recent insight on AEA and resident Cirque shows?  How do people make it work?

Thanks!!

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: SM Internships??
« on: Dec 27, 2009, 10:05 pm »
The Eugene O'Neill Theater Center in Waterford, CT offers a wonderful summer SM internship.  The theatre is a new work festival and a cabaret conference so you wouldn't quite get the summer stock experience but it is an amazing process to witness as there is nothing like watching a playwright's wheels turn.  This is an unpaid internship and last I heard you have to pay for housing but it is an extremely respectable theatre with wonderful talent and many of the plays worked on over their summers move on to much bigger and better things like the Goodman and Roundabout.  They use AEA actors and currently working directors...not to mention, the theater is a short walk from the beach.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: Shadowing: General Q&A

Visiting the theater department while I was applying to college was extremely helpful.  I had the opportunity to meet students, see the theater department, meet the faculty and resident designers, and although there wasn't a show in performances while I was there, I was able to sit in rehearsal and talk to the stage managers.  Now as a senior, I meet with prospective students who come to look at the program--I think it's a great opportunity to get a student's perspective of the program--and who doesn't love meeting other SMs!  I definitely think it's worth observing and visiting before you make the big decision.

Altar Boys is small and pretty entertaining, I've never done it but it seems to be on the smaller side production wise.

Tools of the Trade / Re: Breakaway Bottles
« on: Apr 23, 2008, 11:32 pm »
Thanks for all of your suggestions.  Our props master tried making his own bottle,  cutting it into 4 large pieces and then hot glueing it back together.  Unfortunately it was too thick and inconsistent so we opted for a plastic bottle that was painted to look like a glass wine bottle that did not actually break.  It looks great and some people even think its worse to have the bottle not break because it looks like it hurts more!

Does anyone know of a pre-scored breakaway bottle that shatters into only a few big pieces as opposed to many little pieces and is still safe for the actor getting hit?

I have to agree with that.  I got to the Unversity of Miami and it's a beautiful safe campus that's actually in a very rich residential town of Coral Gables, not Miami.  In terms of safety we are no less safe then any other school, we have the blue light system and security and our own UM police force.  If safety is your reason, you should definately rethink Miami and South Florida.  It's really not bad.

The Hardline / KC Mehl Scholarship 2008
« on: Mar 13, 2008, 11:38 pm »
I was wondering if anyone associated with SMA knows if the 2008 scholarship recipients have been announced or notified.  The SMA website says  "There will be three Scholarship Recipients each year: one from the Eastern Region, one from the Central Region and one from the Western Region of the United States. 2008 Scholarship Recipients will be named in January 2008." I couldn't find any updated info on the website, does anyone have any info about this?

Is there a way to turn a word document into a pdf file?

You should look into the University of Miami Stage Management program.  It includes all aspects of theatre (design, tech, history, etc.) including practical experience every semester.  It's a really amazing program.  PM me if you want more info.

I believe the props master at my university sculpted it out of a block of foam and then covered it with fabric and painted it...

What theatre in Chattanooga, TN?  I have a friend who grew up at at theatre in Chattanooga...she said she's acted and stage managed there countless times.  I can't imagine there are that many theatres in Chattanooga.
