Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: A Chorus Line
« on: Mar 05, 2007, 03:40 pm »
Our strike for Chorus Line last year took 10 hours. We had some really fancy stuf for the finale spent 12K dollars(four thousand over budget) on a bulb drop for the last 90 seconds of the show. Twas great, but made strike take forever....

Using 36-50 degree source four ellipsoidals will give you lots of coverage and a decent amount of control

Something I don't think has been mentioned yet is; train a good ASM and DELEGATE! Many things should be generated by the ASM (with your supervision of course), especially anything having to do with backstage (i.e. prop lists) since the ASM will be backstage during the show.
STOP SAYING YES, no is a good word, one of my favorites.
I like to read.... anything non theater related to take my mind off of stuff.

Hello there folks!
I'm stage managing my first musical in college. I'm not worried about calling the cues to music and such, I've a good music and dance background and I am getting tutored in score reading.
there are a few things about our production that i'd like some advice on;
1-Our set involves a turntable. How do you tape this out (silly thing I know but vital since lots of set pieces will be 'on top of each other' as the table revolves).?
2-We are also using machine operated moving platforms, what advice can you give?
3-During music rehearsals if I have no paperwork to do, is it ok to...read a book and such?
4-What do i need to do to get ready for dance rehearsals, what do I do during a dance rehearsal?
5-ummm anything else?

Thanks for the input, I thought I was right on this one. It's possible he didn't think it was a severe issue because in this theater the lights are only about 5 feet overhead, but it still bothered me that he wouldn't let me stop rehearsal.

Got a question for you guys that came up in dress rehearsal this week. A Gel frame came loose but did not fall from a light over the stage.  I wanted to stop rehearsal to get it but the tech director said not to.
Needless to say it fell on an actresses head 5 minutes later. no harm done except for her and the guy next to her to pick it up.
What are your thoughts on that?

Different colors mean different things and they change as the show goes on.
it may be different levels of a stage that doesn't move, or one color for each piece of a larger set, or the different placements for different pieces.
if spike tape is used during a perfrmance the color changes to blend better with the stage color.

I'm in college at the moment, production stage manager with two asms usually.
This is my third college show and how I break it down is like this;
PSM is in charge of overseeing backstage and communications between subordinate SMs and house.
ASM#1 Calls the show (I call musicals or something very difficult, in this case ASM gets bumped down a row
ASM#2 In charge of props, setting act 1 and two, run crew, relaying scene changes after #1 calls.
ASM#3 (Or a reliable crew member, or #2 during a musical) general gofer, when necessary duplicates #2's job on the other side of the deck.
This frees me up to deal with all the designers (some are very difficult to work with here and i wouldnt want my ASMs to take it personal), actors who are late etc. and communicate with the director/HM.

I have never worked with costagemanager and i'd never want to, there needs to be a hierarcy...
