Hi. My name is Samantha. I'm a junior at California State University, Fresno. I've been stage managing since my junior year of high school. I stage manage for dept. shows and also for various theatres in the community. I hope to go to grad school after I graduate and get my MFA.

Employment / Re: stage management college degrees
« on: Jul 03, 2006, 01:48 am »
Right now I am 2 years into my undergrad degree in theatre. My dept. doesn't offer a concentration in stage management; my concentration is simply design/ tech. I feel that I have learned an incredible amount just by experience. I find that in every situation where i stage manage I learn something new and I gain new strengths. I still would like to pursue my MFA in stage management once I graduate; I feel that I have more to learn and would like to achieve a graduate degree.

most of the time I don't let my board ops doing anything else. When I stage managed The Misanthrope there were barely any light cues so I let them do whatever. However, in most situations I prefer that they focus on the show. Even if the show has gone perfectly every night, something could still go wrong and they would have to be alert and ready to help correct whatever has gone wrong.

congratulations on your success KC!

I agree with the dots, I used to use them but they drive me nuts.
I've never tried the ruler things though, I've always thought i wouldn't like it.
Something I have found that have the benefit of dots, but don't fall off are these little arrows. They come in 5 different colors and you can point them exactly to the right line. I just write on the arrow, ex. LQ5. I have a color for each type of cue.

I had the same problem with my parents. They couldn't understand why I didn't want to be a business major and run my own business. They are eventually accepting the fact that stage managing is what is going to make me happy and the fact that I am gaining respect at my school and in the community as a stage manager.

you make a good point. sometimes i have to remind myself that techs are actually for the stage manager & crew. we are allowed to make mistakes as well (what a surprise  )

Tools of the Trade / replacing things

i agree about remembering what was in your kit. you will just hand out stuff to actors and then you realize one day that you are suddently out of pencils/ bobby pins, ect.!

SMNetwork Archives / friends and actors

i have some similar problems to this. i am doing my undergrad right now and most of my friends in the dept. are actors. i have had some sticky situations with them but luckily they all realize that during rehearsal i have to remain professional and i can't play favorites.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / resume question
« on: Apr 04, 2006, 01:49 am »
i went to a workshop that suggested that we put our references on a separate sheet on paper, not on the one page? is that a common thing or should resumes just be one page?

Students and Novice Stage Managers / heavy paper
« on: Apr 02, 2006, 04:37 pm »
i usually try to use heavier paper. the copier at my school really hates cardstock, it usually gets jammed. plus stage managers don't get any kind of allowance, so the costs of all my supplies are on me.

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / being thanked
« on: Apr 02, 2006, 04:33 pm »

College and Graduate Studies / grad schools
« on: Mar 27, 2006, 12:49 am »
I'm finishing up my second year in my ba program. I am beginning to look into grad schools (MFA in stage management) and I was wondering if anyone has any words of wisdom in terms of researching and applying?
