The Hardline / radio plays
« on: Sep 30, 2021, 03:13 pm »
I am looking into producing a radio/audio play that would be recorded like a podcast and released online. Has anyone done this? I am unclear if this type of work would fall under AEA's jurisdiction.

I have been hired to SM online events using Streamyard. There has also been a technician hired to run the actual tech. Has anyone worked on an online event with a technician? How did you do that? How did you go about a clear com and what was your role. The event will only have two people on it so it would have been easy for me to just run the tech so I am unsure what my role should look like now. Any advice would be very helpful

The Hardline / AEA "guidelines"
« on: Mar 03, 2020, 04:32 pm »
I recently had a producer tell me that the equity rulebook are guidelines to follow as closely as possible but to be flexible if there are times when we really cant follow a rule. The conversation was related to scheduling where we are having a hard time working with actor/director/space availability while adhering to some of the AEA rules. I have heard from other SMs and have always worked off the idea that the AEA rules are rules that cannot be broken without actor approval in writing. I am not an AEA stage manager but often work at AEA companies.

Where on the guidelines vs. hard rules debate do you land?
If you do have to break an equity rule how do you go about that?

Employment / Needing a cover for 2 shows
« on: Mar 01, 2020, 03:55 pm »
I just found out that my sister's graduation is on a two show day for a contact I am already on. We are a couple of months out from the show dates. I have never had to find a cover for shows and I want to ask the producers if I can hire a cover for the two shows. Have any of you done that before? How did you go about that? I was thinking about proposing that I would find and hire a replacement, have them shadow one or two shows and then run one or two shows with me watching before having them take over for two shows. I would also propose that I would directly pay the person out of my paycheck for that week so the producers don;t have to do anything.

Employment / branching into props
« on: Feb 18, 2020, 08:38 pm »
I have been stage managing professionally for a few years and find that while I love SMing I also want to have opportunities to explore other areas of theater. I am particularly interested in props design. I never worked on props in school or professionally so I'm not sure how to break in to that or how to frame a resume/cover letter to get a props gig. I can sew very well and took costume crafts classes in school. I also do a lot of repairs and crafts in my personal life so I am good at building with various materials.

Any advice?

The Hardline / Rehearsals on preview days
« on: Jan 09, 2020, 04:01 pm »
We are on an SPT 4 contract I am unclear if previews count as rehearsals or performances

I know that on one performance days you can schedule a 5 hour rehearsal if there is a 2 hour break before curtain but is that rule true for a preview or could I schedule a rehearsal to go from 5-10 with a preview at 7:30 as long as I give the actors a half hour?

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / VENUES: rehearsal spaces

Hello
We are having a hard time securing a rehearsal space for a non profit company. What are your creative ideas for types of places to try?

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / PEOPLE: Difficult director
« on: Sep 30, 2019, 08:02 pm »
I am working with a director who is very micromanaging and often changes her mind in the moment to do something different then we had discussed. She interrupts me and my team, designers and cast members frequently. I am feeling very undermined in my ability to do my job and help others do theirs because of the my way is best attitude. This director is new to directing and often doesn't know how things are normally done. When I try to tell her how I and the company do things she gets angry and says she feels like she is being questioned by me and the company but she tends to undermine me in front of the entire team. Does anyone have any advice with how to deal with this situation.

Stage Management: Other / Not allowed to use spike tape
« on: Aug 21, 2019, 12:25 pm »
We are rehearsing in a space that will not allow us to leave down spike tape. It is a shared space so we cant leave out anything between rehearsals.  I just need to mark walls, 2 doors and chair placement (the chairs move).

Anyone have any creative ideas for how to mark our set without using spike tape that is easy to recreate each day?

Thanks!

Tonight our PA had a minor medical issue that required sending him home and having someone who knew the show take his place. He has a small speaking part as well as run crew duties in the show. I felt unsure how to note this in my report tonight so I didn't divulge any sensitive information or alarm anyone. I ended up reporting it like I would an understudy stepping in by simply saying that X person went on for Y person tonight.

Curious if this is how others would do this or if you have any other insight into this.

Do you send out line notes after every performance? I send them out after every performance but I'm not sure if this i totally necessary or not.

Employment / low stipend what to do
« on: Feb 25, 2019, 02:57 am »
I was recently offered an SM job for a 7 week contract. The stipend offered was $200-$500 and no housing.

I would be commuting an hour for rehearsals so I asked about the possibility of a higher stipend. I just heard back that they cannot offer a higher stipend and that they couldn't hire me. I am unsure what to do.

If I offer to do the position for less then what I asked for I will lose money but since I have mostly worked for one company I am concerned with expanding my resume and am not currently booked for those weeks.

Does anyone have advice on if I should walk away from the opportunity or email back and say I can do it for less?

Employment / Sources for job listings
« on: Nov 29, 2018, 08:30 pm »
Does anyone have any recommendations for where to find job listings (for SM, ASM, run crew, overhire etc.)

I've been lucky enough to get most of my jobs since graduation through a chain of connections so I'm not super familiar with where to look for listings.

Thanks!

I've been ASM before but this is my first SM gig so I have a bunch of questions about tech.

1. Can someone walk me through what my role is during a spacing rehearsal?
2. I know I need to do a safety walk of the theater what all should I make sure to point out?
3. Can someone walk me through running a cue to cue/wet tech

Any other advice would be greatly appriciated
