Stage Management: Other / Paging Calls in Opera
« on: May 24, 2017, 03:39 pm »
Hi guys! I've been SMing operas for a while, and I wanted to see what format others use when they page performers to the stage, mostly out of curiosity, since I developed my format on-the-job. Do you include character names in the call, or just the performer's name (as Mr. or Ms. Smith)? What about a children's chorus? What about a few selected children from the children's chorus? Do you call them to the specific side of the stage or merely "to the stage"?

Thanks in advance for everyone's two cents!

The Hardline / To Off-Broadway or not...
« on: Aug 10, 2015, 09:55 am »
Hi folks,

I've been developing a pet peeve lately, but I wanted to check in here to see if I'm the only one.

What determines if a production is an Off-Broadway production? Is it the theatre or is it the contract?

I've done a few Showcase Codes at theatres that are Off-Broadway locations (59E59, The Duke, etc.). Do those shows actually count as Off-Broadway credits on my resume? I feel like it's false advertising.

What do you all think?

Has anyone every worked under this code? I just booked a gig under it, and the code is one page long. I'm confused by it, and looking for any words of wisdom.

Self-Promotion / NYMF Show -- Central Avenue Breakdown
« on: Sep 16, 2011, 07:55 am »
A new Jazz Musical centering on two brothers' differing perspective of jazz music in the 1940s and where it's leading them -- both musically and personally. The show explores the various shades of character found on and around Central Avenue in Los Angeles.

I'm very excited for this show. And a lot of people are, too. In fact, Ken Davenport mentioned us in his blog as his number one show to check out at NYMF! http://www.theproducersperspective.com/my_weblog/2011/09/5-shows-that-standout-at-the-nymf.html

Happy Mother's Day! Happy (early) Father's Day! to everyone on SMNEtwork!

Modnote: Thanks, Rpicket. I added a description of exactly what's behind the link. Mods, let's make sure to revisit and update this link in June when the article is replaced.  There will be a permalink but it doesn't exist yet. - PSMK

The Hardline / Rehearsal Shoes
« on: Apr 12, 2011, 07:10 pm »
Hello all!

I'm working an SPT contract, and an actress asked me today about her provided rehearsal shoes. We are not doing a musical. It's a period piece (Victorian) so the shoes are period, I grant you, but the rest of the cast seems just fine wearing their own character shoes.

I just searched thru my rule book, and the closest piece of information I could find was 13-A:
"...Additionally, the Producer shall furnish all Actors with footwear, including properly fitted shoes, tights, hoes, and stocking."

But is that for rehearsals, too, or just performances? Thanks for any input on this!

Employment / Pictures
« on: Feb 28, 2011, 05:13 pm »
So lately I've been seeing a lot of companies asking for a photo in accompaniment to a resume/application, usually just prior to an interview, but sometimes with the initial application.

My question is, how professional should this picture be? Should it be almost like an actor's head shot, or is a casual picture that is nice and clean enough?

Also, is it just really weird that they are asking at all?

Thanks for any input.

saerie, I appreciate the need for a little something for yourself in the kit, but I've run into far too many peanut-allergy actors/designers/directors. While I am always PRO your-chocolate-is-in-my-peanut-butter, I've had to keep that stock at home. My chocolate choice in public is Lindt's Dark Chocolate with a hint of Sea Salt. Still the same kind of sweet/salty combo, but does not run the airborne allergen risk.

The Hardline / Equity Crossroads
« on: Jan 31, 2011, 02:50 pm »
Hey folks, I've been searching through the forums and can't quite find answers for my situation. I'm looking for some opinions.

I just agreed to an Equity contract coming up in the Spring! I'm very excited -- it's a company I worked with as a non-Eq ASM previously, and I loved my time there. I have a concern/question about the transition from non- to Equity. I've already had a job offer for a non-Equity job this summer. I understand that once I'm Equity, I cannot work non-Equity without permission. So am I SOL for this summer job because I will be Equity before it would start? Also, it *may* fall under the category of opera, but I'm not sure.

I've sent an email to the Membership contact I found on the Equity website. Should I also send an email to this summer employer?

Thanks for any advice!

And I guess follow-up questions would be, how do I indicate that I'm in the transitional phase on my resume? And is it weird (or worst of all, inappropriate) to apply for future equity work at this point -- when the contract which would get me my card doesn't even begin until late March?

Thanks again for any advice/opinions.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Interview questions
« on: Jan 06, 2010, 09:35 am »
I have always been decent at answering questions during interviews. However, I've heard that when the interviewer asks "Do you have any questions?" you should have some prepared. Any of the questions I can think of sound stupid. What kind of questions are the interviewers looking for?

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Resume questions
« on: Dec 18, 2009, 06:48 pm »
I know there's a thread for resume questions in the regular forum, but since student SMs / recent college grad SMs are in a different genre, I wanted some feedback on the best presentation of a resume. My resume is not so much a comprehensive CV as it is a presentation of myself for job applications.

That said, what is the general opinion on one-page versus two-pages when applying for jobs? (My references are currently included on my single-page resume.)

Thanks for any help you can provide
