The Green Room / Explaining Stage Management to My Therapist
« on: Oct 22, 2018, 08:38 pm »
Not sure where to put this, so I'm putting it in The Hardline...because it relates to health care...which I have through CAEA. Bit of a stretch, but hey. :)

I'm starting sessions with a new therapist soon, and I'd like to send them a short summary of what a stage manager does, and what the career is like. My former therapist worked with a lot of performing artists, and it was great to talk to someone who already understood the job and the lifestyle, but unfortunately I have to switch things up.

I've found some websites/links that do a good job breaking down the day-to-day responsibilities (scheduling, taking blocking, calling the show, etc.), but I'm struggling to find something that addresses the "soft skills" involved (leading the company, looking out for their well-being, managing conflicts/personalities, etc.) that take more emotional energy.

Does anyone have any links/literature that touches on this? Do you have any favourite ways of explaining/summarizing it?

I tend to default to the "I'm like a personal assistant, but to twenty people instead of just one" line when I speak to friends and family, but I'd love something a little more tailored/nuanced for this particular situation.

P.S. Realizing it's been a LONG time since I've posted anything...though I have been lurking. Hi!!

Stage Management: Other / Royal Opera Live
« on: Jan 07, 2013, 11:43 am »
I've been flicking back and forth to this all morning. The Guardian's running live (and some not live) broadcasts from the rehearsals at the Royal Opera House.

The last thing they have (at London's 7:20 pm, my Canadian 2:20 pm) is a per-recorded performance of The Valkyrie, which you can either watch from the audience perspective, with the conductor, or with the SM backstage calling the show.

Stage Management: Other / Chinese Opera
« on: May 08, 2012, 12:31 pm »
I've just been officially signed on to stage manage a Chinese Opera style show for my university this coming winter. My department has ties with a group from China who will be coming in to work with us, and to do a performance of their own, which I'll also be working on.

I know a few basic things about the art form, but really, hardly anything. Obviously, I'll do my reaserch over the next few months, but I'm wondering if any of you have experience working with this art/culture that you'd be able to share. Or even any facts/links of general interest, that might give me a sense of what I'm getting myself into.

Thanks.

The Green Room / Weirdest Item In Your Kit
« on: Oct 03, 2011, 03:37 pm »
An actor asked me the other day what the weirdest thing I'd ever heard of a stage manager keeping in their kit was. I gave him the standard "unlubricated condoms" answer, and promised to ask around.

So - what is the weirdest thing you keep in your kit? The weirdest thing you've seen in someone else's kit? The weirdest thing anyone has asked you for?

If you're interested in shadowing an SM how far in advance should you send a request? And also, is it appropriate to request certain dates or days of the week?

Tools of the Trade / Soldering irons?
« on: Apr 28, 2008, 08:24 pm »
Quick question!

I've been hearing mention of soldering irons alot lately and, although I know what they are, I'm curious about something. Someone commented about using one of them to repair a headset and I'm wondering how that would work. Does anybody have an idea of that?

College and Graduate Studies / U of Alberta
« on: Jan 03, 2008, 09:15 pm »
Hello all! I'm seriously considering (read: already positive that I plan on) going on to study stage management in university and I've looked at a couple of schools so far (Ryerson, NYU, etc.) and I came accross the University of Alberta who's program seems interesting. From what I understood from my reaserch it seems like the environment would be much more hands on than a normal program (which I like) and I also read that you could get a credit towards AEA if you complete the program. I'm just wondering if anyone here has expiriences with this school they could share with me. Have you heard of it? Visited it? Studied there? Do you know anything about the program and it's quality?

Thanks, all help appreciated!

EDIT: Whisking this off to the Colleges board, it'll be happier there.  Also fixing the title so people don't think you're asking about the Univ of Alabama.--PSMK

Stage Management: Other / Circus
« on: Jan 03, 2008, 11:09 am »
I believe there was a topic on this a while back but I was wondering of anyone had any circus expirience and, if so, how did you come by it? I've always wondered exactly how a "Circus SM" works and what they do. Thanks!
