Students and Novice Stage Managers / SO MUCH PAPERWORK
« on: Jan 28, 2009, 07:21 pm »
It's only the second day of rehearsal for my current show and I am SWAMPED with paperwork and emails and the like.

What are some suggestions you folks have to keep everything organized and happy?

Hi there, it's been a while since I've posted.

I'm currently a student at COD, a great community college with a lovely theatre program.  This is my first year and I've already worked an equity show for a company they host at the school AND I've ASMed a show that was on the mainstage, no small feat for a freshman!  However I am now moving into my first stage managing position at this school. I SMed in high school where I was brought in during tech week to call the show, but that's the extent of it.

Because of my previous ASM duties I did sit in for the rehearsals, but I'd love a few tips on how to keep things going smoothly. My last SM was a complete disaster and I found myself trying to cover her without exactly knowing what I was supposed to be doing.

Thanks!

Tools of the Trade / Spike corners

I got very, very excited when I stumbled across these. Now I don't have to keep a pair of scissors handy whenever I need to mark things out!

Has anyone used these before? Praise or complaints?

Does anyone have a particular way they try and bring everyone together before a show? Generally I attempt to give everyone on crew a little pep talk and often times I'll make my way to the dressing room to perk up the actors.

Do you bring everyone together? Or do you do it separately or not at all? What do you say/do to give a general good feeling prior to the show starting?

Thanks!

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Inner Crew Issues
« on: Sep 05, 2007, 04:57 pm »
I have no idea where I should put this but considering this is high school related and this is, after all, a student forum, I figured this would be alright.

I've SMed for 3 years of my high school career. I like to think that I'm good at it. Someone from our light crew all of a sudden decided she wanted to stage manage and god forbid anyone tell her no. I've made it clear that it's my senior year, it's my last musical yada yada yada I'd really like to stage manage AT LEAST that. I also said that it's up to the directors who stage manages.

She continues to be upset with me and if I ask her to do something (politely of course) she ignores me and does what she wants instead. Keep in mind there is no real teacher in charge of stage crew and it's kind of fallen on me to take the reigns.

Suggestions on how to deal with this? I'm trying to be as kind and understanding as possible but it'll get more frustrating during the shows when it's crucial to get things accomplished.

Tools of the Trade / Stage Manager Books/Manuals
« on: Jun 26, 2007, 11:53 pm »
I'm in need of a REALLY good or semi-good or kind of good stage manager manual/book. Something that can give me a broader overview of different things stage managers need to do, skills they need to learn, different techniques, etc.

Or overall technical theatre books? Any recommendations? THANKS IN ADVANCE.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / College Interviews
« on: Jun 03, 2007, 09:35 am »
It seems as if all of my posts are about college.

Anyway, at my high school we don't run shows like actual, true shows. The stage manager doesn't call the cues and he or she works backstage. Our most recent show we had two WONDERFUL tech directors who showed me what it's like to run a show in the 'real world'.

By the time I go for college interviews, I will only have run one/two shows that will supply me with books but almost no rehearsal experience. Is there anything I can do to make myself more credible?

College and Graduate Studies / SM Colleges
« on: May 14, 2007, 10:34 pm »
I'm debating between two schools to further my education in stage management. I'm stuck between DePaul University in Chicago and Illinois State University in somewhere in Illinois. I'm hoping to go into theatre education after a while.

Any suggestions? :)

College and Graduate Studies / Stage Management Colleges
« on: Apr 22, 2007, 12:32 pm »
I'm a junior in high school and lately I've been looking into colleges where I could stage manage as my major.

I live in the Chicagoland area and I REALLY don't want to go very far away from home.  DePaul University in Chicago and Webster University in St. Louis are the only two schools I know of that are in the general area.

If you know of any other schools around the Midwest OR have any recommendations/comments on the two schools I've listed it would be extremely helpful.
