Employment / Re: Prospects of working toward equity at age 23

Thanks for the tips!

I'm definitely thinking more about cruises now and being a PA at an equity house. I'm about half way through my apprenticeship now and I'm pretty sure that I want to go Equity so I might need to do the PA track at an Equity house until I gain the necessary hours to get my card. It seems that there aren't any theatres in the city of Chicago that will help SMs turn by any guaranteed means so this would mean moving out of the city to a diferent place but that's something I'm wiling to do in order to reach that goal. It just sucks that in a city with as vast a theatre community as this, that there are no options for turning AEA.

So, that's where I am right now.

Congratulations on your fellowship! I started to apply for that one but I decided to apply for Steppenwolf instead, so that's where I'll be this season. ;)

This topic sparked my interest because I'm also interested in going the Equity route. I'm just unsure of what method I want to take in getting there. With my experience and I how I've been seeing my career go thus far, I think I could get my card pretty quickly either way. I'm just not sure WHEN I wanna to it. I still wanna go to school and I wanna get experience in tours and opera. It's just finding a timeline in which to do it, that is the problem.

Another issue I'm running into is finding non-eq sm positions that actually pay a living way. (Which is why I'm running towards a union.) I can't imagine working a show for 2 months with 4 shows a week and only getting $350 for the full run. So, if anyone has advice on how to figure that out, please let me know! (That may also belong in a different thread, I haven't searched it.)

Introductions / Re: Introductory post

Hello everyone! Long time stage manager, first time posting. My helpful trick that I learned from a fellow stage manager years ago is to punch the holes in my script on the right side of the page and put the pages in my book facing backwards so that I can turn the page to show the script on the left and a blank page on the right for all my notes and cues. This seems obvious to me now, but at the time it was a revelation.

Glad to be here!

That's something that I've read about numerous times but I've never actually put into practice. Hopefully, I'll learn more about how to actually use it from here and during my internship.

Introductions / Hi. Acting, Stage Manager HERE!
« on: Apr 23, 2017, 09:58 pm »
Hi everyone! I'm Kia. I graduate from undergrad with a BA in Psychology in two weeks and I can't wait. I just got my first stage management internship offer ever and I can't wait! I have been acting for about 7 years and stage managing for about 3 so I'm pretty new to this but I'm passionate, determined and ready to see what the theatre world has to offer.
