Stage Management: Other / Re: Opera Intern
« on: Apr 29, 2015, 08:52 pm »
Hi!
Are you doing anything with the Spring Sing at OTSL? I'm a high school student who asked to shadow at opera theater. They also asked me to tag along and help out stage managing on Saturday for the Spring Sing. I just thought that this is kind of a cool coincidence. Depending on when you're starting, I might actually be shadowing you at some point! :D

The Green Room / Re: Weirdest Item In Your Kit

I'm a freshman in highschool. This is stuff I found in the box that was passed on to me for my first show.
- Butterfly knife (Not really sure...)
- Broken lighter (previous show - Fahrenheit 451)
- Exacto knife (no clue)
- Random bolts and other crap (concerning because I have no clue where they should be)

The Green Room / Re: The Stage Manager's Nightmare
« on: Mar 30, 2015, 12:57 am »
In my school we have two directors. One of them knows a lot about the tech side of things so during musicals, he's on headset and works with the crew while the other works with the cast. So I stage managed the musical this year (Anything Goes). About a week after closing I had this terrible nightmare:
The show is starting but for some reason I'm in the catwalks still and we have all of our chairs and small set pieces on ropes to pull up and send down. So I'm trying to get down but there are no ladders and then I see my parents sitting in these chairs at a table offstage so I pull a chair up, sit in it, and somehow make my way down that way (there was literally 0 logic in that part of the dream). I run to the booth and my director is sitting in my seat and he suddenly had hair again (he had recently cut it all off) so I sit in my chair but I don't have a book for some reason so I have to use his but I can't read it because of the way its organized. Then I look out onstage and we're doing Loony Tunes? No clue as to why or how.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: The Ultimate Decision
« on: Mar 29, 2015, 10:41 pm »
I, like OP, fell into stage management. I've always been into theater but I was never really comfortable onstage. I've always doubted my abilities and only felt semi-comfortable with musical theater because I'm a choir nerd and am confident in my singing. I'm currently a freshman in high school and in the fall, I auditioned for A Midsummer Night's Dream. Under the box asking if I'd be interested in stage managing, I said "Sure; if needed." I had no clue what that meant but I wasn't confident I'd get into the show anyway and I thought I'd be happy doing anything. A week later I was devastated to be the stage manager. It felt like "failure" was printed across my forehead. Yes, I used to believe this job was for rejected actors, but I'd never been in a show with cast and crew. I was especially sad because I knew other people had been interested in the position and I didn't even know what it was. A few months later and I was begging to stage manage the next production. I'm now also being trained to take over lighting and sound during Seldom Scene (the club that builds sets, paints, etc...basically the techies).

Introductions / Hello

Hi! My name is Kaylie. I'm a freshman in high school and I'm almost absolutely certain that stage management is my passion. I've been involved in theater since kindergarten and I've always felt pretty uncomfortable being onstage. I'm really only comfortable with musical theater (I'm also a huge choir nerd). This fall, I auditioned for Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream.' Under the box that asked if I'd be interested in stage managing, I said "Sure; if needed" unaware of what it really was and assuming freshmen weren't really eligible anyways. A week later, I was devastated when I was put down as stage manager. I had no clue what I was doing and I only felt worse about my terrible acting skills. A few months later, I was begging to stage manage the next production! I stage managed the musical and am also being trained in lighting and sound during Seldom Scene (the club that builds sets, paints, etc... basically all the crew people) Over the past 7-8 months, I've become a huge techie.
