That's awesome! I'm definitely gonna share this with my school's theatre department!

A friend of mine, applying to be my ASM at a student-run company and expecting her resume to only be seen by the director (whom she knew) wrote that some of her special skills were "Giving Danny (director) back rubs and doing whatever Brandon (me) tells me to!" The director forwarded it to the PM.... Awkward!

Now, I'm a little biased because my school just did Peter Pan, but here's my review that I posted on my Tumblr:

Quote
Peter and Tiger Lily had no emotion, Chris Walken looked like he just wanted to go home the entire time, Wendy should’ve covered her ta-tas, and their fight choreographer should be fired. Other than that, it was pretty okay.

Oh! And if anybody wants to follow me...  ;)

I would recommend seeking internships at professional theatre companies, concert venues, or other performance spaces. I'm not aware of laws and union representation in Australia, so I'm not sure how much (or if) you'll be able to make money from that, but if that's not an issue, internships would be great for you to rub elbows with people who might help you get into that school, or even better, help you get bigger professional positions.

Hope this helps, and good luck with getting into uni!

Thank you both. I have replied to the PM's e-mail and told him I was not comfortable giving up the position. So far, no response, so I'll just have to wait and see how this turns out.

Hi, everyone. I need your help on a difficult issue.

I am a sophomore stage management student at a small university. I have a few shows under my belt at this school, two serving as ASM, and two as SM. I am scheduled to SM a production next semester for our small, student-run company (at my school, we have 4-6 main stage shows per year through the theatre department in addition to a few other shows through a 100% student-run company). The company's PM e-mailed me asking if I would be willing to give up this position to a freshman who just changed their major to stage management. My concerns are A) Do they have enough experience to be SMing a show right away? Should they maybe ASM a show and work their way up first? And B) I was really looking forward to working on this particular production. Not only do I like the show and the people I'll be working with, but I also feel like I need more experience SMing in an educational setting before trying to find opportunities in the professional world. Will I look like a jerk if I just say no for personal reasons?

Tools of the Trade / Re: Flameless sparklers

Have you ever seen those toys that you get at the circus that have fiberoptic things coming out of them with lights on the end? Google "fiberoptic toy" and you'll see what I mean. That's what I think of when I head "flameless sparkler".

Good luck!

Thanks, but I don't think that's what he wants. I can ask him, though.

No, there is no such thing as a flameless sparkler. They are also (technically) a pyrotechnic effect - which may have some flow on effects for you depending on your local laws (generally they are excepted from legislation except perhaps total amount that can be stored on site). Also, the standard 8-10" sparklers light fairly easily with a standard match, if your director wants the large ones - they need to be lit with something a lot hotter (like another sparkler).

From a safety aspect, the sparklers burn at between 1000oC (1800oF) and 1600oC (3000oF), eject slag which can seriously mess with your floor over a long run, and produce not inconsiderable amount of smoke (the bad kind, not the food grade suspension of water molecules we use for lighting effects). They are also responsible for 16% of fireworks injuries in the US and have started numerous fire (including devestating bushfires).

Nothing is insurmountable though.

Darn... He doesn't want to do fireproofing, have people ready with extinguishers, etc. if we don't have to. We may just wind up scrapping the sparklers idea.

Tools of the Trade / Flameless sparklers

Hi guys, quick question...

Is there such a thing as a flameless sparkler? Like, something that looks like a sparkler, but doesn't burn or produce any sort of fire risk? My director wants to use sparklers as a prop, but doesn't want the trouble of setting up fire safety measures onstage. This is his suggestion, but so far, I haven't been able to find anything like it by searching the internet. Can anyone help?

Thanks!

Tools of the Trade / Re: SM App Price

Definitely a break timer and show runtime/scene change timer. And maybe some sort of drawing tool to make ground plans? I don't know how complicated that would be, but it'd definitely be very helpful.

As stated above, exactly how much it does is HUGE. I also rarely pay more than $2 for any app if I do pay for it at all.

Awesome link! Thanks! Let me just add that ifttt.com (the last item on the list) is absolutely fantastic and I encourage anyone reading this to make an account and play around with it for a while. I was recently assigned to do a presentation on this service and I am so happy I found this. I would tell you what it does, but it does a million different things with texts, phone calls, news websites, email, Facebook, Twitter, and a whole lot more. Just give it a look, play around with it for 20-30 minutes.
