Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: Stage Manager Pay
« on: Feb 05, 2013, 11:50 pm »
This is my advice . . .

if you can do anything else and be happy, do that.

I completely agree with this statement. Stage Management is one of the most difficult, time consuming, thankless jobs I have ever even heard of. You have to fight to get work and (if you're doing a good job) will constantly work far outside of your job description for the sake of the show. This is a job where you give up everything for your work, ie weddings, birthdays, births, deaths, holidays, your health, and sanity at times. It requires a huge amount of stamina and initiative, and very few people are paid well.

If there is a question about whether you want to do it or not, then don't do it.

Thank you all for your input! Your suggestions have been both reassuring and helpful. I have reworked my resume and feel happier with it.

Although I have experience in lots of other areas of theatre, I definitely want to be thought of as a stage manager. I limited my other positions to one credit in each area, which I hope will keep me from getting shuffled into other departments but still convey my ability to connect with those departments.

Gosh, I love this website.

Employment / How do I make a short resume look more appealing?
« on: Feb 05, 2013, 05:06 pm »
I'm narrowing down my "technical theatre" resume into a stage management resume. I only have three college credits in stage management (one as an ASM), but I love it and am determined to find stage management internships.

How can I make my resume look better when I have such limited specific experience?

Introductions / Just Discovering SMNetwork

Hello, fancy new website!

My name is Rebecca and I just discovered this site while looking for tips to update my resume.

I am about to graduate from Eastern Washington University with a BA in theatre and am currently looking for housed internships in stage management. I love the theatre and have always approached each project looking for a sense of the whole. This attitude has helped me gain a wonderful general education in theatre, especially technical theatre, but also means I have limited experience in each aspect of theatre. I have finally found my passion in stage management and it is time to gain some more experience and hone my future craft.

I am extremely excited to find such an excellent place to connect to other stage managers of all levels!
