I'm currently in the process of assisting my theatre company in revamping our high school internship program. I would love if anyone can point me in the direction of other high school internships in theatres or could give me a copy of another theatre's high school internship handbook of some sort.

I would greatly appreciate any help in regards to this. Thanks!

The Green Room / Re: useful websites for life

This is also a useful list of websites.
http://www.buzzfeed.com/jessicaprobus/33-amazingly-useful-websites-you-never-knew-existed

I've been using http://sleepyti.me/ quite a bit before this site. It helps during tech for sure!

I've never given or received but I'm always checking if there's an escript that I have to share. I know I haven't received any but I've never been put out by it. It just means now I'll have that script to give someone in the future since I ended typing it up.

The Green Room / eReaders!
« on: May 21, 2012, 03:41 pm »
I just got a eReader for graduation! I'm so excited to do some reading now that I'm not a full time student and stage manager. Now I'm just a stage manger. Anyone have some good reading suggestions? I'm going to be downloaded a lot of classics that are out of copyright now but I'm interested in what other people are currently reading.

Thanks for the input!

The Green Room / Re: summer vacation

My boyfriend and I will be taking a road trip from SD to MI after my season closes this summer. I'm super excited, I've never done anything like that before.

I think it's really hard doing an unpaid internship. I did one for a summer where there was an entire intern company that made the shows possible.  Interns in the light and sound department were board operators. The stage management department were the backstage people. The company literally would not have run if the interns decided not to work. That didn't happen of course, but it was definitely a learning experience.

Having done this unpaid internship, I know I would never ever do one again. I was expected to know the job backwards and forwards, have little to no breaks, and I had to pay for food and housing. It was an awful summer but I learned what kind of places I wanted to work for in the future. I do think there are some people out there who do need to take a stab at the unpaid internship, see what it is like, and take what good they can away from it. I can attest that I am a harder worker and have more of a passion for good theatre with good workers. I would not have had that if I hadn't worked at my unpaid internship for a summer.

4. The employer derives no immediate advantage from the intern;

Um, don't all theatre companies that have unpaid interns generally benefit immediately? Intern ASMs for example...
It's a sad thing, using interns to save money while pay exorbitant amounts for other things. //sigh
As a student coming out of college and having done an unpaid internship, I will never do it again.

The Green Room / Re: SM: WORST THINGS

An idea I heard somewhere is to cover both sides of one edge of the page with clear packing tape, and then hole punch through the tape. Sort of a pre-emptive version of those round stickers.

I may have to try that one with my newest show. Sounds like a good idea!

If my grandparents get me an iPad as a graduation/birthday present I may be testing it. I'm bummed it won't be available on the iPod but oh well. Keep us updated please! I'm interested in hearing results.

Or how about when you print labels and they don't print centered on the label and instead cut the names in half! That's awful!

I agree with Bex, auto-formatted hyperlinks are awful. I haven't found a photocopier with automatic hole punching but that sounds heavenly!! I wish we had one of them... maybe we do and I haven't found that function on our copier yet. Let the investigation begin!

Sometimes I do use pre-hole punched paper though that I found in Staples. I use it for my scripts because I get OCD about the hole punches in my book especially. Plus it's harder to redo an entire script than a few pages to go into my bible. I've had to teach a few ASMs I've had in college how to properly hole punch.

Employment / Re: Program Bios
« on: Apr 18, 2012, 08:07 pm »
Thanks for all the suggestions! I think I will be providing them with a more fun one (saying how happy I am to work with the theatre for the first time) and another more 'serious' one with just show credits. I'll let them know my preference but they can choose whichever one is more appropriate.

I keep asking them so many questions I'd rather give them more than what they need. Haha.

Employment / Program Bios
« on: Apr 17, 2012, 11:32 am »
I was looking around the site and could not find any information on what to include for a program bio. Perhaps people would be willing to share what bios they have used in programs before?

For some background, I'm going to be the SM for the first time out of college and I'm wondering how to best summarize myself in 80 words or less. Do I include that I will have just graduated May 2012? Should I include past work in college or only professional past worK?

I found this website helpful but it's not exactly what I'm looking for. http://upstagereview.org/ActingArticles/SAMPLE%20BIO.pdf

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: Mentorship Program
« on: Apr 01, 2012, 03:42 pm »
I have been fortunate enough to participate in the Stage Management Mentoring Project for two years now at USITT. While looking into the SMNetwork mentoring project I was hoping to see some of the things that I participated in while at USITT in an online format with more people.

There are a variety of "round table" discussions on a variety of topics (equity, marketing yourself, the differences between types of SM gigs, what it is like to work with IATSE, etc.) I know many topics are discussed in forums but there is a benefit (in my opinion) to having discussions in more of a chat room style setting. Mentors/mentees would be able to be able to discuss personal experiences and perhaps things they are experiencing right now.

I also think, if there is close enough proximity between mentors/mentees that shadowing mentors would be a great possibility.

Yes, this may seem simply like a different way to discuss things already on this website but it may have a different meaning to someone getting immediate feedback in a chat setting.

I also like Matthew's suggestion of working with someone for a week or so on a resume. Having personal feedback on a resume/cover letter/portfolio would be helpful and may be a way for people to feel more comfortable about putting this kind of personal work out there to someone who is "mentoring" them and they will get private feedback.

These are just my thoughts. I do see the difference between an in-person mentorship and online mentorship and definitely believe that it is harder to foster an online mentoring relationship.

Thanks a bunch for all these suggestions! I will be in Custer, SD with the Black Hills Playhouse. I have been contacting people about the job and asking them their suggestions as well. =] I was happy to add a thread about summerstock though. I had found the thread on touring (thanks for the link!) to be quite helpful, but there are some differences since I will have my own room for a summer as opposed to having to pack everything up for different venues.

Thanks for the help.
