The Green Room / Re: USITT 2013 (Milwaukee, March 20-23)

I'm not going to USITT but I went to Jim Guy's firearms safety workshop a few years ago at ACTF.  He is very informative.  They also give you a lot of helpful handouts about firearm safety.  You'll definitely learn a lot.

You only have about a minute to present.  However, make sure you have enough to talk about for more than a minute.  It depends when the respondents cut you off.  You present your prompt books, and then they give you the response and ask you questions.

I was nervous presenting the first time I presented too.  Make sure you talk about any challenges you had during the rehearsal process and performance run.  Did you have any really crazy scene changes or costume changes during the show?  Was there a large cast?  Did any understudies need to fill in?  Did any emergencies occur?  If so, how did you handle the situation?  Did the script have any unique challenges like script rewrites?  For example, I watched a stage manager's presentation for The Drowsy Chaperone, and he highlighted how an actor had to roller skate while blindfolded during the show.

Also, the two professional stage manager respondents might ask you questions about your prompt book or the challenges you describe during your presentation.

Break a leg!

The Green Room / Re: Smallest Audience Size

The director of a children's show at my university added a matinee performance so some of her students could attend the show for class.  Only 3 students attended the show in a 524 seat theatre.

I saw this cool video awhile ago on YouTube.  The technical director at Florida Rep explains how they created the projectile vomiting effect.

The rehearsal area has wireless internet.  All of the stage manager's technological devices always have a great internet connection.

I just ordered the free business cards from Vista Print.  It was only $1.99 to get a blank backside on the cards.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: Short Form ans Symbols

I use ent. for enter and ex. for exit.  I also abbreviate the names of different locations if the play has multiple locations.  Right now I am using RS for radio station, FS for flower shop, and DO for dentist office.

I just found another listing of stage management MFA programs on BroadwayWorld.com's College Center.  Here is the link:  http://broadwayworld.com/studentdegree/Master-of-Fine-Arts-in-Stage-Management

I just came back from the Region III festival.  There were some great workshops for stage managers.  Did you go to the firearms for the stage workshop?

Each high school has different duties for student stage managers.  I definitely have more responsibility as a college stage manager than I did as a high school stage manager.

Most of the tasks that you listed are usually associated with the stage manager.  Stage managers usually do not design the set and lead the construction of the set in the professional world.

I recommend checking out some stage management books if you want to know the duties of professional stage managers.

I've been applying to graduate schools recently and several of the MFA programs that I'm looking at will pay for your tuition.  Wayne State University offers assistantships to all grad students and pays for their tuition and fees.  They also give them medical and dental insurance.  CCM at University of Cincinnati offers scholarships and assistantships to select grad students.  All grad students at Carnegie Mellon receive a fellowship that covers part of their tuition.

I know Wayne State University does a month in Moscow trip every summer.  The students study at the Moscow Art Theatre School.  Undergrad and graduate students of all theatre disciplines can apply to go on the trip.
