Self-Promotion / Re: Lion King National Tour

Congratulations!

The TD of the second show I ever stage managed way back in high school lent me a copy of the 8th edition, and I loved and read and re-read that book for as long as he'd let me keep it. Definitely a huge game changer for a high schooler with no SM's around to really look up to. Always wonderfully written, and easy to read.

Despite having recently used AirBnB quite successfully to book places for longer sits on tour (kitchens are so exciting!), I must say Offstagejobs has been a significantly more useful professional tool.

Employment / Re: What (not?) to wear
« on: Aug 13, 2013, 09:23 am »
For interviews I have a grey suit I love, that matches just about every top I own. Suits can be a little dressy, but they're very me. I have a jade bracelet that I usually wear for interviews or special occasions, and it has a good story to it, so that's  always nice.

For rehearsals I tend to wear either comfortable dress pants or nice jeans with sneakers or closed toe, low heeled boots, and a blouse. If I'm wearing jeans or it's cold in the rehearsal room I'll also often wear a blazer. As many have said, I'm young, especially where I'm working, so I try to air on the side of dressing up more often than not.

For running shows, I usually wear nice black jeans or black slacks, and black sneakers, low heeled quiet black boots (my favorite!) or work boots depending on what I have to do during the show. Some combination of that plus a dark top and a black cardigan always works.

Opening night is about the only time I'll wear a dress, and usually I change into it after the show... Somehow there's always something I end up needing to do where I wouldn't want to be in a dress... They are fun to wear though. (:

Self-Promotion / Ailey II
« on: Jul 17, 2013, 08:45 pm »
In a whirlwind month and a half of rep summerstock since recently graduating college a year early... I am thrilled to be able to say that I have accepted the stage management position with Ailey II (the second company of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater)! I am so excited!
It's also a bit crazy, as I am moving to NYC Sunday night after a two show day. I'm really looking forward to getting to know the city, and thus far it seems like Ailey is going to be a great place for me. Either way, working in dance has always been a dream, so getting this job right out of school feels pretty surreal and amazing. Thanks for letting me share!

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: Rehearsals: Be quiet!
« on: May 15, 2013, 12:14 am »
I am personally a huge fan of preceding the announcement of "Quiet, Please!" with something. I say "Ladies and Gentlemen" a lot- it's respectful, and if they don't hear that, then they're at least paying attention by the time you get to the word "Quiet". Some people think that's too formal for them and find their own way they address their cast. Pretty much anything works.

In high school I was really good at the pointed look and the shushing. It may have helped that everyone knew me as a really quiet person until I started SMing, so they knew I meant business if they made me raise my voice. I do think every SM needs a good pointed look. Not a glare, necessarily, just a look that makes people notice they're being looked at... (:

Congratulations! I know people who've been on the show in the past, and they've all seemed to really like the challenges it presented. Best of luck, and safe travels!

Employment / Internship Choices
« on: Feb 14, 2013, 04:38 pm »
I am currently in the really pleasant position of needing to decide between two SM internships, and I am looking for some feedback.

The first is with the Contemporary American Theatre Festival (straight theatre in rep):
I was their Assistant Company Manager last summer, and loved everyone I worked with. It's a good situation.

The second is with Des Moines Metro Opera (Opera in rep):
I don't have much prior knowledge of this company, and I have never worked in opera (though I can read music well, pick up languages easily, etc). I was flattered to get an offer, but again, I don't know anything about their people.

They have very similar pay and housing situations, both good.

Basically, I'm torn between returning to where I worked before and continuing to build relationships with the upper management there, or working in a field I have yet to experience and am interested in. They're pretty equal for me right now, but I need to make a choice!

Thank you in advance!

Does anyone have a word version of Eleemosynary, by Lee Blessing? Please PM me, if so. It would be greatly appreciated!

Tools of the Trade / Re: stopwatches?
« on: Sep 18, 2012, 05:38 pm »
I second Bex. I can't seem to find a decent stopwatch anywhere that JUST times things, much less a decent silent one.

Thanks for reviving the thread, bex!

Glad you made it! I'm sure it was an exciting, but very busy time for all involved and nearby.

Sidenote: I remember Hugo... I grew up 2 hours from Charlotte. In the "we're going to go to Charlotte this weekend to actually go shopping" part of NC that is pretty but close to nothing. Must've been pretty big to top that storm! Best of luck with your season!

The Green Room / Re: Show me your mugs! (Or water bottles)

And for hot drinks:

It's a teapot with a twist: the bottom contains a filter and a valve. When your tea has brewed to your satisfaction, you plonk it on top of a mug. The weight of the pot sitting around the rim of the mug opens the valve, and the tea is strained into the mug, leaving the leaves in the pot.

I tend to go in for fruity herbal teas, and this has the added advantage of letting me see the teas as they brew: sometimes they're very pretty!

Of course, if you usually stick to teabags, a plain old mug is probably best.

Do you find it inconvenient to have to clean the "to go teapot" all the time while in rehearsals and such? Or do you just use it once and let the used leaves sit in the pot the rest of the day? I love the idea, but I feel like depending on location if I didn't have access to a sink where I could clean it fairly soon after use it would get kind of gross.

EDIT: Fixed formatting. -PSMK

Tools of the Trade / Re: Style Question
« on: Aug 19, 2012, 12:43 am »
I tend to always shoot for business casual or better. Part of it is that I'm young, and often work with older casts/directors, etc, but part of it is that is what makes me feel good. I always joke that the two items of clothes that make me feel the most confident are my steel toes and suits. I'm personally a huge fan of the sneakers, nice jeans, and a button down look and a suit jacket if it's chilly. I almost always wear closed toe shoes for safety and practicality (the primary spaces I work in require a lot of walking through the scene shop to fetch extra chairs, props, etc, not to mention the usual issues of moving heavy things around), and heels are fairly uncommon for me. I find that I dress a little better for SM jobs outside my university just because those are times when I can dress specifically for the job rather than class, lighting calls, dance classes, etc, though I try to keep it all fairly consistent because I prefer to promote a professional attitude in the university setting. I've found it has actually helped maintain a better attitude in the rehearsal room among some of the less experienced members of casts. I think that it's most important to wear whatever it is that makes you feel confident, authoritative, and ready to run a rehearsal.
