I completely agree about having a conversation starter skill.  I have "skilled at making shaving cream pies" as well as "proficient as decorating with spike tape"  on mine.  People always ask and it tends to lighten the mood during an interview.  The first resume I sent out with the shaving cream pies skill I got a call for an interview.  At the end of the interview the PM asked about it and then told me they actually had a show with shaving cream pies in it.  A few days later I was offered the job!

You never know what will do it in this business.

I have had a lot of issues balancing this in my past.  It was mainly a problem in college when I was living with some of my actors.  I had some issues with them not respecting me and back-talking in the rehearsal room and when this would happen I would pull them aside either at rehearsal on a break or as soon as we got home to have a discussion about how I knew we had a personal relationship as well but in the theatre I was in charge and if they had any issues to approach me about it in a professional manner(whether in or out of the theatre) so we could discuss it.

I do like the suggestion of telling everyone that outside of theatre you can be buddies but inside it's work.  Once in the professional world I haven't had many issues with this(except when working with people who are on their first professional job sometimes).  But I love to be friends will all of my cast and crew if possible.  It not only makes work more fun but it typically also makes your company respect you more and vise versa.

BEST OF LUCK :)

Hey guys!  So I just agreed to PSM a tour with a brand new company that's heading out on the road for about 2 months.  I've done small tours before but never a bus and truck.  Just looking for any kind of advice or tips anyone has for me.

Thanks! :)

Employment / Re: To tattoo or not to tattoo
« on: Jul 20, 2011, 10:13 am »
I personally have 15 tattoos and a 6 facial piercings and they have not effected my employment(to my knowledge) at all.  Disney is a big no-no with tattoos so if you've got one in an area that could be seen while wearing shorts and a t-shirt you are out of luck with a getting a job with them.  Other than that the only issue I ever had was on a TYA tour and one person in one of the houses was relatively rude to me and I see no reason why he would have been like that other than my tattoos and piercings.  But one house out of around 70 isn't bad.

I personally say if you want something small on your wrist go ahead and do it.  My philosophy is if you are working behind the scenes it shouldn't be an issue and if it is...that's not someone I want to be working with anyway.  Let's be honest here we're not supposed to be seen so why should it matter?

I was recently out for a few months doing all one-nighters and brought 2 bags with me(one large and a carry on sized bag), one thing I did that made my life much easier was once a week or so I would bring both bags into the hotel and pack my small bag so for the next week I only needed to bring that one bag in.  It was very helpful when checking out of the hotel at 6am.

Also it is a minor thing but on a TYA tour when call can be extremely early pack your bags and put whatever you can in vehicles the night before.  That extra 10 minutes in the morning is a God send.

If you are a coffee drinker, bring your own travel mug(most places will charge you less if you have your own).  And for birthdays/Christmas/any gift giving occasion ask for Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks, Panera, etc. gift cards! Hotel coffee can be horrible!  Something I am going to try next time is buying my own grounds and keeping them in ziploc bags so I can make my own in my room since most places have coffee makers in room and then use the hotels cream and sugar.

Stage Management: Other / Band Management
« on: Jul 09, 2011, 04:55 pm »
Hello everyone!!

Managing a band is something I have always been very interested in doing and I was hoping for any and all advice/tips anyone has on the topic(how to get into it/contacting venues/press packets/job responsibilities), I admit that I don't know much about managing a band and would appreciate any information you could give me.  I have a few friends in smaller local bands and would love to get my feet wet doing some things for them; they have said that I could be their manager, I just want to know more of what I would be getting myself into.

Thanks in advance!!

I recently applied for a applied for a position and got a response telling me I was qualified and asking for photo, even before an interview and they did not ask for a photo in their online listing.  Is this odd?  I've never experienced it before.

Tools of the Trade / Droid 2 v. Iphone?
« on: May 25, 2011, 02:06 am »
I have seen that this topic has already been discussed but since technology changes so rapidly I figured a new topic was the best way to go.  I am due for an upgrade and seriously debating whether a droid or an iphone is better.

About 90% of the time I am using my phone is for SM duties and am looking for any advice you have on the Droid 2 and the newest Iphone(or any other recommended smartphones).  I have done extensive research and played around on both but the pros cons come to about equal for me.  Any remmendations/input? It would be MUCH appreciated.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Tour advice ATAFY
« on: Jan 27, 2011, 05:37 pm »
I'm just looking for advice, helpful hints, things to look out for, etc.

I've gone out twice before but only for short periods of time where we played multiple shows at each location and didn't have more than 2 stops.  In a little over a week I'm going to begin rehearsal for a children's theatre production with American Theatre Arts for Youth where we will be on the road for about 3 1/2 months and  will hit new venues everyday and I will also be driving the truck along with the TD.  I'm going to be the PSM/Company Manager and would appreciate any helpful tidbits of knowledge you've got to give.

Thanks!

Uploaded Forms / Props Tracking
« on: Sep 20, 2010, 12:48 pm »
Looks like my last post got deleted in all of the mayhem that's happening with SMNetwork right now but I'm hoping that someone out there has a props tracking sheet that they would be willing to share with me??  I'm starting rehearsals for Noises Off tomorrow and would like a better tracking sheet to go in with than the one that I have now.

Thanks!!! ;)

« on: Jun 30, 2010, 07:44 pm »
So I was hired for my first professional non-intern job and I am realy excited but also...rather nervous.  I will be ASMing a tour that rehearses in the city for less than 2 weeks and then we tech and run the show within a week.  It's coming up soon and I'm getting rather anxious so just wondering if anyone can give me some tips, things to look out for....anything that may calm my nerves a bit?

Thanks!

Employment / Re: work samples?
« on: Mar 31, 2010, 10:17 pm »
Thanks!! I'm going to be e-mailing samples with my resume I was thinking of sending props lists, tracking sheets, run sheets, and maybe a rehearsal and performance report.  Do you think those would be adequate?
