Okay. Thanks

I don't know where you are, but in chicago at least, alot of theatres post internship opportunities on the league of chicago theatres site. While many are restricted to college students, not all of them are so its worth taking a look. If you don't happen to be in the chicago area, look to see if your area has a similar site set up, or even just call your local theatres and ask about interning.
Ask your director/ TD if they can recommend any programs too. They may even have some connections that will help you get in.

usually I just bring my kit, because it's all contained in a rolling backpack, but at a minimum I bring my script, a small notepad (I'm sure this will eventually be replaced by my laptop, which is on order), pencil, gerber, and safety pins, bobby pins, hair ties, and bandaids in my pocket. I'm working with high school and college  students right now, and thats what they have a tendency to ask me for. If i'll be backstage I'll throw in my maglite too.

I applied to both Webster University and DePaul, but chose to go to Uof Illinois. It has a really good theatre program (and costs less if you're in state). Since I will be a freshman there this fall, I can't tell you for sure how their SM program is, but thats where i'm headed and the school was my first choice.

I just graduated High school and am looking to change my resume from one oriented to colleges to one for the professional world ((now that I've taken care of getting accepted to a theatre program.)) My main concern is how to catagorize my experience. I have several school productions and concerts to list as educational experience, but our theatre was often rented out and I worked on deck crew or spotlight for many of those, and i'm not sure how to catagorize them (Some were paid, some unpaid.) I've also had two paying gigs since I graduated, one as an SM ((and completely unconnected with school)) and one as a camera operator at my high school's theatre. What would you recommend I use as my headings?

I'm getting a $500 stipend this summer for SMing a musical. Basically just pays for gas, but since I just graduated high school in may, not too shabby.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / making trees
« on: Jul 09, 2008, 01:52 am »
When we made tree stumps for the Wizard of Oz this past year, we used a wonderful plastic that none of us knows the name of. It was clear and came in a continuous sheet on a large roll. When subjected to a heat gun it melted into very tree-like ripples, and when cool, could be painted without any problem.

Now I have someone who wants me to build them an entire tree and I need to get ahold of some of this stuff. Does anybody know what it's called and where I can get it (or something similar) ?

We just did Wizard of OZ this past school year, and we used a single strobe flash I believe, and our lighting designer put a flickering orange light on the scarecrow. We buried the flash unit in the straw of the broom and wired a button on the handle. Of course, the witch had a different broom for the rest of the scenes.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Kooza SM
« on: Jun 04, 2008, 02:37 pm »
Its my dream to work for cirque someday, and Kooza is coming to chicago this month. I'd like to see if I can watch their stage manager. Does anyone know who the SM is and how I would go about setting something like this up?

Expensive schools aren't the only ones with BFA programs. I'm starting at the University of Illinois this fall, where i'll be earning a BFA. I applied to DePaul and Webster too, but I liked the atmosphere better at U of I. So its really all about where you feel comfortable.
