Stage Management: Other / Re: Just did my first wedding...

I have never really thought of using a stage manager for weddings, but now that I think of it it seems like a really good idea.  I mean no one is more organized than a stage manager, and if you want to make sure that your wedding does not have any problems, you hire a stage manager.  That's a great idea.  I just thought I would share what I was thinking.

Every program is different.  I got a BFA in theatre from Valdosta State University and also had to take core credits.  It was a really good program that taught everyone the basics of all areas of theatre as well as in depth studies of your emphasis.  I guess it just depends on where you go.

Stage Management: Other / Re: Talent Show Tips please?

What I did to make things run faster during the show was make a list of the recorded music that people needed and in what order it they go in.  Then I had everything organized in a box according to the order, so the change time between tape/cd was minimal.
From my perspective, that kind of "system" just screams accident waiting to happen.

It actually worked perfectly.  Back then the technology didn't exist to rip the tracks, though if I had to do one now, that's exactly what I would do.

Employment / Re: Too Old

First of all, 28 is not old.  Second of all, you were probably right to withdrawal your application.  You deserve to work for someone who will hire you for your experience and knowledge of theatre, and not for your age.  At 24, I feel like people won't hire me because I am still young.

I actually had to do one of these in high school.  What I did to make things run faster during the show was make a list of the recorded music that people needed and in what order it they go in.  Then I had everything organized in a box according to the order, so the change time between tape/cd was minimal.

Anytime I had to do props for a show, I would try to make things out of paper mache (I think that's how you spell it).  It's pretty durable, and a lot of fun to play with.  You could probably get it better formed then a sock.  Anyway, it's just a suggestion.

It's hard being in the university setting because you do not have a lot of liberty to reprimand the actors.  What I would have done in that situation is speak to the director about the situation and see what they say.    A lot of actors do not want to listen to someone they consider a peer, especially if it's a friend.  This person needs to know that if they continue to act this way, directors will not hire them in the future.

We actually had one of those signs drop for the finale too.  Ours, on the other hand, was made of wood and gold glitter.  I don't think my college wanted to spend that much money on actual light bulbs.  The only down side was that there was gold glitter all over the stage.

I also type the scenes (or arias/songs, or acts, or whatever dramatic division makes most sense) on regular paper formatted into little 1/2"x1" flags. I then trim these flags and attach them to the script/score pages using scotch tape. These usually run down the right side of my book.

I do this as well, but I put each scene on a different color of constructions paper.  That way the pages of the script will be easier to turn individually and I have each scene color coded so I can find it easier.  I started that in college and it was great because no other notebook could be confused with my bible.  It was too colorful to be somebody else's.

Depending on how much downtime they have, and how much you need your run crew to do, it's possible to split up the actors so that not one actor is doing too much.

A Chorus Line was actually the first full length show that I SMd.  It was extremely easy.  I remember strike taking 45 minutes.

When I was in college, we used actors all the time for run crew.  It basically came down to how many actors were sitting backstage with nothing to do.  I say put them to work.  Now if you are doing a show where the majority of actors have little backstage time, then I would try to find other people.  What show are you doing?
