Tools of the Trade / Re: Going Green

Printing anything that gets posted on a call board or signs for the rehearsal hall on recycled scrap paper.  (I.E. an old draft of a scrip, copying mistakes, ect.)  Just something simple but very effective.

I like Tread Safe http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=3933676

They are used in restaurants mainly.  One could get away with them being dress shoes if need be.  But they are quiet, and are easy on the feet and its hard to slip in them...hence the name.

Tools of the Trade / Re: Fire extinguishers on the catwalks
« on: Jan 30, 2008, 04:08 am »
In the area of North Carolina that I am in, it is against fire code to "tamer, alter, limit or block access/use,  or other wise change a fire extinguisher, pull, control panel or announcer."

Fund out the hard way when building maintenance changed the color of the fire extinguishers from red to white "to fit in better", they coved all warning/info labels with the paint. Fire inspector came and inspected 24 hours prior to opening night and long story short, no one was aloud back in the building until new fire extinguishers were installed, inspected and the building re-inspected.

Thinking outside of the box here...

if you have a pit or a trap door that could be opened on stage- you could put a large fan sitting at an angle and have someone release handfuls cards in front of the fan, it would create is cool effect with the wind and Alice's dress. (and you don't have to worry about a few pesky cards getting loose and fly in during the next scene.)

never tried it, but it is just an idea if you don't have a lot of time or fly space.

Theater makes magic, not a death certificate.

Don't do it.

If I understand correctly...lightning touched the building and if it had enough power to fry the dimmers, I wonder if the fire alarm system was affected.  And if the building was struck, there could a high risk of fire in the roof causing a life or death situation.

My plan of action would be to calmly empty the house (i.e. remove people via the main doors and then outside [to a parking deck if available], same with the actors and crew and makeing sure that all persons are accounted for), also I would ask that someone (FOH Staff) call the Fire Department and ask them to come out and inspect the building / fire alarm system before having the building re-opened to the general public.

just my idea of what I would do.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Because we currently don't have a "home" (its being renovated) someone would make tickets In Word, but now that we are moving in in a few months it is my job to find a ticketing system.  I think that we are going to go with etix the board of directors likes the price and that they are a local company.  But thanks again!

Have you though about using gobos with a slider/rotator on a cyc?
But this may turn out more like an  underwater effect depending on how it is done.

I have been hired as a stage manager and box office manager...and instead of useing the company's  "just print some tickets and keep track of them" I want something that will do it for me.   Any advice would be great.   Thanks!

I am First Aid, CPR and lifeguard cert.  I also have an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) cert.   Its a really easy class, and it can come in handy with an abundance of AED's in the workplace.  But you have to be re-certed. every year with it.  I

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: SMing children!
« on: May 14, 2007, 01:16 am »
one more thing from me...

try never to be left alone with a child or the children.  Try to always have a least another adult in the room.  If you find yourself in a situation like that leave the door open so that people can see/here the rehearsal.

This is coming from personal experience when I found myself alone with the kids, and parent (who I later found out was an Asst. District Attorney) mentioned that I should never be alone with a child/children, because I could be accused with a bunch of stuff (I think you know that I am talking about).    But most children theaters have policies on this.

Keep the the call times and the younger kids in mind.  The longer that the younger (8-11 year olds) are in rehearsal the louder and less focused they get.

When I do children's theater I always try to greet the kids by name when they sign in (at the production table) and ask how their day was and make light conversation with each of my young actors.   I have also found that getting a routine together such as playing a particular  warm up game at each rehearsal, or taking a break at X hour, helps the kids focus and such.

I am sure that you are going to do great and have a blast, a smile can go a long way!
