Announcing the 2008 KC Mehl Memorial Scholarship Recipients.

The third annual award of a one-year Associate Membership in the SMA was granted to Claire Diedrich (Bloomington, Indiana) an undergrad at Indiana University and a veteran of internships ranging from Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival to Opera Australia; Melissa Margolin (Tempe, Arizona) a newcomer to stage management and a senior at Arizona State University, she won the University's Alfred de Liagre Award for her skills in management and leadership; and Vanessa Poggioli (Brooklyn, New York) with a B.A. from Bryn Mawr, she is currently a first-year M.F.A. student at Columbia University where she is becoming a stage manager of distinction among her professors.  Each year applications are received from across the country with three chosen, each representing the Eastern, Central and Western Regions of the country.  This year's recipients will participate with past recipients in periodic on-line chats, teleconferences, and in a SMA mentoring program in an effort to improve the social, networking and planning aspects of their SMA activities. Throughout the year, recipients are asked to provide updates on their developing careers and their relationship with the SMA.  The program looks to develop future leaders of the Association.  Keep your eyes on these talented young stage managers!

I also have many friends who are Stage Managers. Both acquaintances and people who I interact regularly and seek for advice or comfort.

On the other hand, one of my best friends is also a stage manager, but we've found that we cannot be in the same booth together because we have such strong personalities. We are still good friends, we just know not to work together.

I would agree with previous comments. New York is hard to break into, especially without your Equity card. If joining AEA is something you want to do, it would likely be easier to get your card somewhere else, then move to NY with the card and the experience. It is also good to have friends who can help you get work.

The sheets of paper they are handing out at the picket lines has that statement or something very similar from AEA on one side and a statement from IATSE on the other.

Ultimately everything is the Stage Manager's fault isn't it? I don't think you were out of line to tell the SM. Although the SM probably shouldn't have yelled at the crew, we are all human and for better or worse we handle stress differently.

In the end it was better for the SM to find out before someone got hurt.

I'm currently doing Fiddler on a SPT 5. We have 6 principals and 2 chorus members. The way I understand it is we need to have a deputy for principals and one for chorus, right? If the cast unanimously agrees they only want 1 deputy instead of 2 does equity care?

Phoenix Theatre in Phoenix, Az is a LOA to Lort D theatre. They just started their season, but check back for next year. They give you housing and a small weekly stipend I think. Everyone I've talked to has really enjoyed it. phoenixtheatre.com

It's also important to remember, depending on the configuration of your theatre, other people will be listening to your conversations. Example, I work at a road house that has a squawk box in the tech office, which is USL. One time there was some conversations over the headset about the person in charge of the event (it was some corporate thing), the door to the office was open, someone from the org was walking by the office, heard the conversation and the rest of the day was hell.

I too have heard nothing but good things from a friend who worked there last year. I would be curious to see what you think at the end of the summer though.

I downloaded the demo version and have been using it today. It is actually a really nifty app. I know that word has a notebook version, however it's not the same. Or at least not that I am aware of. With this app I can truly make an electronic version of a prompt book with tabs, all of my rehearsal reports in one place, contact info, etc., etc. The only downside if anything is that in order to be able to do that, it has to be pdf, but since macs have a built in pdf converter, not a big deal... We'll see how I like it as the show progresses.
