Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Stop The Show!
« on: May 23, 2006, 10:13 am »
Ummm yea......I've been working in lowly community theatre for 6 yrs now and this past weekend at our opening of "NINE", during the overture, not more than 3 minutes into the show, someone yanked the fire alarm in the lobby and ran! I am ASM'ing this so I was backstage, while the SM was out in the house calling cues! I jumped about 10 feet in the air and just about wet my pants! This has never happened to me before.......the actors kept going though and I gave a signal and stopped the actress who had spoken lines immediately after the overture ended. WHEW!! The entire building had to be evacuated while the fire dept. did a walk thru etc etc, reset the alarm, we were back up and running from the top of the overture within 20-30. But, never until then did I know that fire alarms TALK!!!  8O

Scary, but educational I must say.......

Students and Novice Stage Managers / How to ASM
« on: May 01, 2006, 09:55 pm »
I ASM'd for 4 yrs. before being tugged by the earlobe to try to SM instead. But during my tenure of ASM'ing shows........I was 'assumed' anywhere from a Running Crew Chief or sorts, backstage Manager, to the backup SM for calling a show if he/she was out sick, had an out of the theatre emergency, or whathaveyou. But, all in all, you really do need to coorespond with the SM so you're both on the same page with things. You do becoming his/her right hand woman/man, just as the SM becomes the Director's right hand woman/man! Break a leg with it!!    :D

Employment / Under what circumstance is it right to...?
« on: Apr 14, 2006, 02:48 pm »
I backed out of SM'ing a community theatre gig last year that I was committed to months ahead of time to run lights for a pro DC theatre to get my foot in the pro DC door. The Director at the community theatre was/is a close friend so I was certain she'd understand my position with needing to make MONEY doing SM'ing (finally!). However, she took it really hard and was very upset with me about it cuz I had gone back on my word. I felt horrible about it, but it truly came down to which direction would PAY since my day job doesn't make me a rich person by any means. And living in the DC area is just as expensive as NYC or Boston!

Anyway, I stood my ground and signed the contract with the DC theatre company. However, that same community theatre Director came back to me a couple months after I turned her down (and initially it was a VERBAL yes), and asked me to SM her Fall show with her own new pro theatre group (which pays!).

So, even though it was a 'bumpy' ride at first, I think I ended up winning in the end and all turned out ok. Time heals usually.........

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Stardom
« on: Apr 04, 2006, 02:20 pm »
Yes, that makes perfect sense, thank you! However, there are a couple big name actors that I'd love to work with but I also idolize.......I guess in the grand scheme of things though, when I'm trying to do a job and do it well, I'd be in another world mentally anyway. Therefore, the actor that makes me drool wouldn't seem so 'big' then. Don't mean to sound high school-ish or fan-ish, but I do think it's a real part of the whole theatre/entertainment world that one must get used to if they want to make it to the 'big time'!  8)

However, now, thanks to my fellow wise SM e-friends, I have a much clearer vision of just how it would work if I were to stumble upon a job working on a production with someone I was a huge fan of. Thanks again guys!  :D

Thanks for that perspective. I applied for a government Theatre Specialist position with Wolf Trap Center for Performing Arts in Vienna, VA not too long ago (Dept. of the Interior) & had to assess this part of my personality after applying. Just in case I happened to land it!

Just say to myself 'they are people too'.........  :D I guess it wouldn't be as hard as I'm envisioning. Thanks again!

How does one professionally handle being 'starstruck' while having to work with a high profile celebrity on a production? I guess this comes naturally with years of experience and a 'seasoned' SM?? I have a tendency to get starstruck and want to nip that in the bud pronto before I get to the level I'm aiming for. Suggestions? Other than to act mature in the situation and 'hide' it?

Thanks everyone!  :D
