The Green Room / Re: Things Stage Managers Say
« on: May 06, 2012, 03:28 pm »
"Ladies and Gentlemen: 'Tis time, 'tis time."

"It's not my place to tell him to trim down there.  That's Hair and Makeup."

Anyone have The Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged they would be willing to share?  Thanks!

Please send to AEASMAllie@aol.com

I hope that everyone is on the up and up, and that this actor wants to ASM, but my fear is that the producer may tell the actor that they don't have to do anything stage management related in order to get them to sign the ASM contract.  Contracts that allow for actor/asms often only have a very minimal pay increase for the ASMs, so they don't expect to do more work.  Be careful and find out exactly what is being told to this actor.  I hope they prove helpful, but I fear you will end up without any support.  Good Luck!

In a professional AEA situation that is a producer decision, not stage management.  I feel it is a producer's decision to make even in a community theatre situation. There is an urban legend that states if there are more cast members than audience members, the cast can decide not to do the show.  That is NOT true.  As a matter of fact, even if there are no audience members, the producers can still have you do the performance.  They are paying for it.

Agreed. Loved it in theory, was not a fan in practice for the same reason as sahuff.asm.

Marcie,
It has been a while, but I have worked on a number of shows that rolled over into a Mini.  What are your reservations?

The Hardline / Re: negotiating

I presume you are talking about an individual negotiation.  What is the size of the theatre?  What contract are they under? How many seats?

If you are talking about being part of a negotiating committee for an entire contract ie SPT, LORT, etc, I can't help you.

Good Luck!

Attach one end of a piece of string to the floor.  Make the string the length of the radius of the circle and attach a piece of chalk to the other end.  Chalk out the circle, then tape over.

I am of the belief that if anyone on my crew makes a mistake, it's my fault.  Maybe my instructions weren't clear enough, or I didn't fully explain the importance of the task.  Whatever the reason, it is my job to prevent and therefore, my fault if it happens.

How about just a suggestion of a stream by using something, like rocks, to create the banks of the stream?

Employment / Re: Sub Calling Stage Manager

I would suggest:

Calling SM (sub)

That gets the point across.

You can look at the Peterborough Players in Peterborough, NH.  It is where I have worked for the past 8 years.  You can find contact information on the website at Peterboroughplayers.org

The internship runs June - August or September.  You can get EMC points.  You asm 6-8 shows, receive housing, and low weekly pay.  It is enough to live on if you are careful.

From one of my recent performance reports:
"Audience member refused to take urine cup.  [Actor] put it on her seat anyway"

The Showcase Code and Staged Reading Guidlines are two very different things.  Check with AEA.

I have taught people on 2 shows how to dance the Charleston (I'm not a dancer by any means, just have a knack for this one).

I have had to teach actors how to play backgammon on 3 shows.

Playing Gin, Hollywood style, is big in my family.  That came in VERY handy during a production of The Gin Game.

I have experience explaining the games, if anyone needs to know it for a show.
