Tools of the Trade / Re: What is Gaffer Tape?
« on: Mar 17, 2007, 08:46 pm »
Cool. kjdiehl understands. I was an electrician before an SM. During strike calls I need to get tape off before other things can be struck. I don't like to be the guy who's holding things up trying to pull tape with my knife after a show's four month run. That's why I use the tab. I never know how long the tape is going to be there and how often it's going to be stepped on. I guess it rubbed off into my SM jobs.

To build on sam,
I recently worked under the original production stage manager for "O" at Bellagio for a show here in Philly. What a woman. She was always professional and very approachable. She said it was the  most challenging and rewarding project she has ever worked. She explained that originally there was no position to see the entire space she was o right over the giant pool; so they built gondolas FOH for Aquatics, Lighting/Automation, and Stage Management. Everyone there, she said, was the best in the world - so her role really was to manage the traffic to keep things flowing smoothly. Safety was the the most important item. I wouldn't be surprised if the trapeze team reset to their offstage positions and went for it again. It could have been a safety issue. These artists strive for perfection for themselves and the audience. I didn't ask if the cues are taken off the SM or by the operator's visuals. I don't know...the accountability should lie with the SM. Her advice for young SMs? "Work hard". I can imagine it would be difficult to sum up years of blood, sweat, and tears to someone who just has to experience it to understand. I was lucky to work with her.

I'll see what I can do.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: School or work?
« on: Mar 03, 2007, 02:18 am »
I'm in the same boat as you. I would have an AA in Technical Theatre, but I haven't changed my major on paper from philosophy. All I ever wanted was to work in a professional environment. I couldn't find it at school so went looking for it.

I asked a very demanding teacher of mine for advice when I was in high school. He took off his glasses and looked straight in my eyes and said, "work hard". I understood what he and my family had taught me all along. Thus my mantra was born. "Seek those with standards and meet them. Exceed them. Then repeat. Set the standard."

My plan is to get some real world experience then go to school in about a year. I just have to have faith that I'm doing the right thing.

I could never find a bite-lite like Go's when I needed one. I'm going to bother the heck out of Office Max till I find one.

SMNetwork Archives / Re: Printers

I'm waiting on the new Kodak printers to come out. They say the ink cartridges will be cheaper. The thinking is the cheaper the ink, the more you you will print out. I think it would be a great work printer.

It's funny that Mac Calder mentioned it as an intern job. I'm in Philly doing an internship show. It's funny walking into a Riteaid.
"Could you point to the med tape?'
"and the baby oil?"
"and elec tape?"
"and is the 12 pack the largest you have?"
"Oh, ok."
" you know what? Where are the sandwich bags?"

Also, condoms are quick, but sandwich bags do a better job. On packs. That is. Condoms are great when you have to swap out batteries or the pack during the show.

If you're a student, there probably isn't much you can do anyway. Dunno. Pessimistic, i know. I want to see what others say.

Latest toy is the three watt LED MINI MAGLITE. Looks like the old one, but still takes 2AAs but is a bit longer than the regular one- so it doesn't fit in my NITE IZE leatherman/mag beltclip. It's pretty bright though,  I would suggest it. ~$22 Home Depot.

I use a Klien tools 10in1. It's not insulated, but it reminds me to be careful and to make sure the line is dead. I can't think of a time when I had to work on anything live.
