Employment / Where do you find non-union SM gigs?
« on: Apr 07, 2016, 03:08 pm »
Hey everyone! I'm recently non-union and am wondering if there's a good place to find non-union gigs around the country. My city has a decent job site for the theatre community, but I'm wondering if regional theatres looking for non-union SM's post anywhere? Would love people's thoughts. Thanks all!

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: RED canvas tips
« on: Jan 30, 2013, 03:35 pm »
Hey folks!  In the end we decided it just had to be a new canvas every night.  We got a great deal on a roll of muslin and went that route.  It's not a cheap show to do by any means.

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / SHOWS: RED canvas tips
« on: Dec 07, 2012, 06:06 pm »
Has anyone worked on RED?  I'm actually prop designing it and am wondering if anyone has any secrets on how to do the canvas stretching/priming/painting nightly that won't cost an arm and a leg.  Ideas or what was done on a production you did?

Employment / Corporate Events
« on: Oct 10, 2012, 03:03 pm »
I'm hoping to expand into corporate events and larger scale things outside of theatre.  Anyone have any suggestions on where I can find jobs like that?  Haven't seen much of that stuff on BackstageJobs, so I'm wondering if there's somewhere else I should be looking.  Thanks friends!

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / PROPS: Blood Recipe
« on: Sep 19, 2012, 02:28 pm »
Hey all!  I'm looking for a good blood recipe that will not be sticky, hopefully not dye the actors skin or costumes, and be ok if it gets in an actors eyes (fairly inevitable).  Any suggestions would be super helpful-the cheaper the better!

Employment / Academic cover letter
« on: Sep 15, 2012, 10:34 pm »
Is anyone willing to share cover letters they've written when applying for an academic position?  I have one, but not sure I'm totally happy with it and would love to see examples.  Any tips/must have/don't need things would be great too.  Thanks!

Employment / Re: Career Goals
« on: Apr 27, 2012, 10:50 pm »
Honestly I have never set a long term goal.  For the most part I just keep searching out work and hoping to get shows!  :)  I do a mailing annually to theatres I'm interested in working with, and I keep up with what's going on in the industry thru a variety of trade websites/publications.  I read and see a lot of plays so that I'm familiar with shows I may be asked to do.  This business is very fluid, and it's often hard to plan ahead.  I did go to grad school and have worked in New York-both things on my "list".  At the moment I've decided stability is needed, so I'm gunning for resident PSM position somewhere.

Employment / Stay freelance or PSM?
« on: Apr 27, 2012, 06:36 pm »
Hey SM friends. I've been freelance for almost 15 years now, and am in the interview process for a PSM position. I love the variety of freelancing, but am craving stability at this point in my life. Those who have traded freelancing for PSM'ing, how have you felt about it?

Employment / Hints For Getting On A Broadway Tour
« on: Jun 20, 2011, 08:34 pm »
So I'm thinking I might really love to do a national tour.  I'm AEA with a good resume, but don't live in NYC anymore and don't want to go back permanently.  I could easily find a place to live for a rehearsal process for a tour, just not sure where to send my stuff to even be considered.  Anyone have any helpful hints?  Thanks!

This very same thing happened to me when I was doing a production of Angels In America in a relatively conservative city.  People were shocked (even though we'd clearly stated what the show included) and would leave.  I think the best thing you can do is just encourage the actors-their performances are great, you're just dealing with audience members who weren't prepared for/are uncomfortable with the material.  It has nothing to do with them, these people just didn't pay attention.  You may also talk to the box office and/or house management about having signs where people pick up tickets and near/on all of the main theatre doors reiterating the racy material, so if they missed it while making their decision to come see the show, they know before they walk in-perhaps preventing them from walking out.

I guess I'm of the school of thought that unless you are bleeding, have a broken limb, etc. you do the show.  I've called shows throwing up in a trash can, running excruciatingly high fevers, etc.  If there's no one that can run the show (because sometimes even with a great book no one else can do it) than you just have to make it happen.
