High school stage manager, craving to learn
« on: Jul 03, 2012, 05:52 am »
Hey everyone! I'm Eric, a 17-year-old high school senior located in a very small town in North Carolina.

Ever since I was in middle school I was obsessed with acting. It was all I wanted to do, even though I always helped with organization and crew work. When I was a sophomore, I ended up writing my school's spring production, starring in it, designing all the costumes for it, organizing EVERYTHING for it, and working on stage management-type stuff more than the stage managers did. That was when I became fascinated with stage management. My good friend Sami had been my school's stage manager since she was a sophomore, so I learned a lot about it from her. Being so dedicated to stage managing (and theatre in general) is really hard in my school, since there are about five people total who even understand what a stage manager does, and a very small amount of people who care about theatre at all (I'm seriously the only person who actually wants to make a career in theatre at this point in time - with the exception of my sister, who is starting her freshman year as I start my senior year.

This past year, I stage managed our school's productions and I am planning to stage manage the productions this coming year (My last year of high school!). I've got a few colleges planned for the future but I'm heavily hoping for East Carolina University, which offers a concentration on stage management. I've realized that this is what I want to do for the rest of my life (along with play writing on the side), and I am so eager to learn and work as much as I can!

I really hope to learn a lot from everyone here (I've already found a bunch of great stuff to use next year on the Forms page) and maybe pass on advice given to me from others and things I've learned in my experience so far.

Your passion for the field is palpable even in writing, keep that going!

It sounds like you've already scoured the boards but be sure to hit the posts under Students and under Regional Advice especially. I didn't personally attend ECU but I hear great things about their program. I'm currently based out of Charlotte, so if you ever have any NC-specific questions, feel free to PM (private message) me.

Welcome aboard!

Welcome!  It's great that you're so passionate already.  No one in my high school (including me) even knew what a stage manager was, so you've got a leg up on a lot of people already.
Check out this thread ( http://smnetwork.org/forum/tools-of-the-trade/stage-manager-booksmanuals/msg28999/#msg28999 ) about Stage Management textbooks & manuals- a lot of times SMs in high school end up doing so much more than what is strictly the SM's job (not that that's a bad thing!), it might be helpful for you to have some perspective on how things differ out in the real world.
You will have to sing for your supper & your mortgage, your dental coverage & your children's shoes, over & over again while people in desk jobs roll their eyes the minute you start to complain. So it's a good thing you like to sing.

Thanks you guys! I intend to do a whole lot of research before school starts this year, as well as during the school year. My theatre teacher has explained a lot to me about the difference in what I do here and what stage managers do in the professional world. I'll definitely check out the threads you guys mentioned. I really want to learn as much as I can.

Hello and welcome to SMNetwork!  You say that you're in a small town, but if there are any larger cities with professional theatres near you, get in contact them about shadowing their stage manager.  Or hit up the Southeast board in Regionals and see if their are any NC based SMs that would be willing to chat with you/let you shadow.  And hold on to that eagerness/excitement/passion! Best of luck to you!

Welcome to the forum fellow North Carolinian! It sounds like your incredibly passionate and excited about stage management and that's really awesome. It's really nice to see that from someone who is also in high school/just graduated who is that excited about theatre. Break a leg at your new school by the sound of things you're going to do an incredible job!
