Another Brand New SM!
« on: Jan 10, 2013, 07:41 pm »
Hi everyone! I am stage managing my first show. I'm in college and its quite a different show. We are doing Alice in Wonderland... (yeah yeah same old same old) but no! We have someone who is writing an original version of it. I think what really makes it unique and I'm not sure how I will keep my sanity is that we are doing 4 performances at THREE different venues in three different cities.

Hello and welcome to SMNetwork!  That sounds like a very interesting project.  Is the show for your college or a local professional company?  Sounds like you'll be gaining some very valuable touring experience early in your career.  Hope all goes well on your show!

It's for the theatre organization at my college. We have a chapter of Alpha Psi Omega and it's our project for this semester.

Welcome!  I am also working on a production of Alice in Wonderland.  Because it's community theater I get to be involved in many aspects of the production, and so right now I am making costumes for the Tweedles and Rock Lobsters.  I love how fanciful the show is - there are so many ways to be creative.  I hope you are having fun on your production.  Look forward to hearing how it all goes!  Break a leg!

We are doing Alice in Wonderland... (yeah yeah same old same old)

Don't say that too fast.

The first show I ever stage managed was a version that combined Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass. Three hours long; a cast of 23 playing over 30 roles; a chorus of dancers; complete scene changes (performed by the cast) every three pages or so; cues for lights, sound, three followspots, two smoke machines, and a bubble machine.

It's left me with the distinct impression that if I can do that, I can do anything.

That being said, it's a fun story to work on. Very difficult for people not to enjoy that odd assortment of characters.

I'm coordinating tech for a ballet version of Alice.  Worked on an all youth stage play production last year.  Very excited about the ballet version as we will be using video projection as scenic elements!!
This story is so timeless and wonderful.  Keep us posted on how it goes.

Oh my god! I would love to see a ballet version of Alice! I am a dancer as well and that would just be so amazing! And we are also combining aspects of Wonderland and through the looking glass. We are also including the Jabberwocky like in the Tim Burton movie. It is going to be a huge puppet. We have someone who can build puppets and the way she is building it, it's going to require three people to maneuver it.

I also agree, it's such a fantastical play and I am already falling in love with it.

One of the best shows I've ever seen was a version of alice. It was circus style and called "looking glass alice"

Check it out, and don't pass up any opportunity to see it. Seriously. Best. Show. Ever.

The Royal Ballet over here (UK) based their first new full-length work on Alice in Wonderland. If you happen to be coming over to London in the next couple of months, it's in rep again - otherwise, it was televised by the BBC, so may be available through certain online video websites.....

I actually will be in London in July. Think it will still be running then? Its just so much better to watch ballet in person.

I'm afraid not - only running until 15 April! However, I'm sure there will be something you'll enjoy when you get here! If you need a tour guide or have any questions though, just ask!

Will keep that in mind! So for an update on how my Adventures in Wonderland are going. We had auditions and callbacks this week. Now to keep in mind we are a small college and the Theatre has virtually no degree program. We had 79 people audition. That is more then our main stage shows ever get and it was a HUGE deal. The director of the show has worked on off broadway shows and and has been a director and professor for a long time and he said he has never seen anything like that.

So we now have our killer cast lined up and are about to get the ball rolling!

I survived auditions and God help me to survive the rest!
