Deadline February 1, 2011: Stage Mangement
« on: Jan 23, 2011, 05:42 pm »
Attending school at: Illinois State University
Instructor: Adam Fox
Training level: Undergrad
Project due date: February 1, 2011

Questions:
For my honor's project I am going to read a book that would be beneficial for a stage manager to read.  Other books we are reading include The 360 Degree Leader, Blink, Nudge, and The Backstage Guide to Stage Management.

I am looking for book suggestions to read that relate to the field.

Probably one suggestion you're not expecting: Jeffrey Gitomer's Little Red Book of Selling. I found it invaluable for teaching how to market yourself to prospective 'clients' and though much of it pertains to corporate sales, there is a wealth of information that can easily transfer to stage management.

For professional development for any career I highly recommend anything by Malcolm Gladwell, however if you're going to ask me to pick one I'd go with "Blink".  It's particularly relevant to the fast paced world of live theatre.
Get action. Do things; be sane; don’t fritter away your time; create, act, take a place wherever you are and be somebody; get action. -T. Roosevelt

Getting to Yes- it's about peaceful conflict resolution and 3rd party negotiation/mediation. It's geared towards spousal disputes, employer/employee disputes, etc. but it's 100% applicable to actor/actor or director/designer or whatever combination.

You will have to sing for your supper & your mortgage, your dental coverage & your children's shoes, over & over again while people in desk jobs roll their eyes the minute you start to complain. So it's a good thing you like to sing.
