WHAT NOT TO PUT ON YOUR RESUME . . .
« on: Feb 08, 2014, 12:07 pm »
I know why they put it on there . . . they wanted to look cute, they wanted to be memorable . . . but t just came off as odd and immature . . .

Please don't put what level you are on Candy Crush . . . just don't.

Over ten years ago, I got a resume which included a photo montage of her day as a stage manager - it made her stand out . . . but not in a good way.

Be careful about being too cute or precious . . . it may just backfire.

I just can't... I totally understand what they were trying but, wow...It's sort of sad because people have no idea how small mistakes like that can make a huge difference and no one ever tells you. But we received a HUGE mistake resume the other day, a two-parter done with clip art probably in MSpaint.

Should I not have done that?  Whoops...

But....but it's my biggest achievement in the past year! I spent 18 hours a day every day to get there!

I had to account for my recent unemployment didn't i?

And won't you be relieved knowing I'll spend every rehearsal entertaining myself, rather than bugging the actors and director with my notes on how they could do things better?

So, should I reconsider the Bubble Witch high scores section?

Come on, don't tell me that scoring 66 on Flappy Bird isn't an accomplishment...

I scored one million on Asteroids. On Atari. In 1984. Totally a special skill...

A friend of mine, applying to be my ASM at a student-run company and expecting her resume to only be seen by the director (whom she knew) wrote that some of her special skills were "Giving Danny (director) back rubs and doing whatever Brandon (me) tells me to!" The director forwarded it to the PM.... Awkward!

I do have one not-an-SM-skill-at-all on my resume: Juggling. Literally juggling three balls in the air, not the sort of "juggling" we're all doing, all the time.

I read a bit of advice somewhere that I really liked; put one interesting, non-related skill on your resume. It rounds you out as a person, makes your resume stand out a bit, and it gives an interviewer a jumping off point for the dreaded, "So tell me about you, I see you can juggle..."

Also, who knows. I might do a show someday where one of the cast members has to be taught to juggle!
