UPTAS- Little experience, and production interviews
« on: Jan 21, 2009, 06:18 pm »
Thanks for the advice. I have another question, and maybe this one should be posted in the 'Resumes' section. I'm attending the United Professional Theatre Auditions (UPTA's) next month. They are similar to the NETC's, SETC's Strawhat, etc. Anywho, I'm auditioning as an actor, but I also want to participate in the production interviews as well. Like I mentioned before, I've never stage managed before, and I'm wondering about how to approach the interview. I don't have a production resume (although I have been on some run crews), so how do I honestly but confidently interview so as to be put in the best light? Should I even bother until I have done SOMETHING? Just wanting some sort of direction. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I think unless you have significant experience in the backstage realm, it would be a mistake to do production interviews. It will be a waste of your time and the companies interviewing, and you may be taking a time slot away from someone who has the experience and resume. I would liken it to showing up for an audition without sheet music, or saying that you did a play once in grade school and thought it would be fun. Not very professional.

You can always look for people offering internships.  Also, as opposed to a formal interview this could be one of those conversations that happens at the bar at night after the day's activities are done.

In my time at various conferences and expos I've always had more substantive conversations and gotten more meaningful business done at night than during the day.

Thanks for the input! I'm grateful for the advice I've gotten on the SM Network.
