Social media links on website
« on: Oct 25, 2014, 08:20 pm »
Hello!

I am in the process of creating my website, and was wondering what opinions were on posting social media links to Twitter, Instagram, ect.    I am a soon-to-be graduate hoping to find work.

My reason for having social media on my website is to showcase my personality, since stage management is such a personable career. But I also understand the opposing argument, which is that it can make me appear unprofessional.

Here's the site: www.margaretAheffernan.com

Thank you!!

Personally, I don't like it. It doesn't seem professional to me- but, I confess to not being active on social media so I'm probably biased by my own preferences. I just like to keep my personal life and professional life separate.

However, if you want to showcase your personality, I think there's way to do that on your professional website. Have you thought about including an "About Me" section?

If you are using social media in a way that benefits your current productions and does not breach privacy then it could be a means of demonstrating your use of technology in communication.

However, this would have to be your only use for it. Production-related updates interspersed with what you had for dinner would not work.

My opinion:
Your LinkedIn profile should definitely be included. Your Twitter or your blog should be there ONLY if you use it professionally and not personally. Your Facebook or your Instagram? Probably not.
My twitter account has a lot of articles and work or SM-related tweets. It also has a lot of random stuff, including profanity-filled tweets about the refs in the SEC (I mean really, you're calling pass interference on the offensive team?! #$*% you!) and links to political articles/opinion pieces. My twitter profile is public, I'm not trying to hide my opinions, but I'm also not linking it to any professional websites. If a potential employer really wants to find me on Twitter, sure, they can do that and see what I think about on the daily, but again- I'm not providing the link for them.
You will have to sing for your supper & your mortgage, your dental coverage & your children's shoes, over & over again while people in desk jobs roll their eyes the minute you start to complain. So it's a good thing you like to sing.

If you have a non-personal Facebook page, a non-personal Instagram, a non-personal Twitter...then I've seen them work for some SMs. Just be careful not to cross your personal with your non-personal social media.

If you are going use social media, make sure the accounts are used in ways that contribute to discussions or engage people in a positive way.  Also, make sure they are active.  If you have your Twitter account linked and your last tweet is 13 months ago, what's the point?

In addition to LinkedIn, I recently re-purposed my Twitter account from a personal (read: inactive!) account to something I'm using for professional reasons.  It involved deleting most of my old tweets, changing my profile description, picture, etc...
