Seeking Stage Management Fellowship
« on: Jan 25, 2008, 05:44 pm »
I am starting the early process of seeking theater companies that offer stage management fellowships or lucrative internships. My graduation is currently set for Dec '09, but I want to collect information early on opportunities.

Ideally I'd like to find an opportunity that offers points towards Equity, housing (or at least a nice enough stipend to afford some kind of housing and/or aid in seeking housing), and a potential opportunity to be hired on post-fellowship.

I understand I will most likely not get an ideal fellowship, but I have come across a few very good set-ups. Basically I am seeking anyone who ideas or tips for what will be a post-grad trying to break into stage management. I am extremely open to touring, regional theater, even overseas if the opportunity is good. Any recommendations?

This has been in the SMNetwork Links directory under Publications for several months now.

They're available only in print, from http://www.theatredirectories.com/

I'm working at Northern Stage in Vermont right now and I know they use a PA for each season (6 Shows) that goes from about September-June.  I don't know what they pay but since they're a LORT D, EMC points should be available to those interested.

How do you like working at Northern Stage?  They're always advertising for stage managers and they are close to my usual ski mountain (Killington).  I stopped in there once many moons ago and thought the venue cute but don't know anyone who's actually worked there.

I love it up here.  The venue is a small thrust but they have a strong core audience base.  The people here are great and they just went LORT this season after a number of years as Guest Artist.  The quality of work is really good because they know how to work with their small space.  They're also about to start a campaign to build a new Theatre (keeping it a small thrust).  I came on for one show in January and will now be here for the next one as well.

Check out McCarter Theatre's internship program.  I believe they have two SM internships: one with the Mainstage SM dept, one that splits time between the Mainstage and the education dept. (that intern SMs a TYA-type tour in the Spring).

I know they provide housing and a $75 weekly stipend.  Its a great company, with great contacts.  And Princeton is a great town to live in.

Touting my program at the Shakespeare Theatre Company.

$150 a week, plus housing, working on main stage shows.

It's all classical theatre all the time, which is a downside.  But big shows, big casts, automation, lots of fun toys, BUT you do have to work with me.  (A huge downside, I know).

I find this post made even funnier by the fact that your current profile shows that you've made 666 posts.   ;)

I totally noticed that too!

And thank you you so much for promoting your company MatthewShiner. It looks like a great company and believe or not, classical theatre is one of my favorite types to work with. Do you know what kind of housing they give? $150/week with housing is a decent deal. I'm just hoping this is a good part of D.C...

Housing is either small studio or shared two-bedrooms on Capital Hill - within walking distance of the rehearsal hall, and a quick trip on the metro to either of the two theaters.  Neighborhoods are about as safe as you can get in DC, with the note that living in the big city (well, semi-big city) always has some drawbacks.

Shoot me an e-mail at mshiner@shakespearetheatre.org with other questions.
