Non SM jobs for former SMs
« on: Apr 04, 2017, 11:19 am »
I love theatre, but am looking for a more stable and full time job outside of the theatre world.
What types of jobs have people looked into or gotten that utilize the same skills a SM would have?

Have you done a search on this? I am in paperwork hell but will try to find the topic name (tho someone else may find it first  PSMKay?) but this has had a deep discussion on all the areas where SM skills translate into real world assets and jobs. And so many things, from wedding planners and event coordinators to pretty much any job that requires patience, organization and creativity.

Here's a more recent thread on the topic:

Try looking under the "Employment" section of the forum. I've seen a few out there, in case the one above doesn't help.

I've found that working as a personal assistant utilizes a lot of the same skills, organization, people skills, and adaptability especially.

I work in nonprofit development, which I find has a lot of the same skills -- communicating between departments and with funders, tracking deadlines & deliverables, event planning, etc. For a long time, our Development Director was also an SM, so she totally understood if I needed to change my schedule for tech. :)
