Non SM jobs for former SMs
« on: Apr 04, 2017, 11:19 am »
I love theatre, but am looking for a more stable and full time job outside of the theatre world.
What types of jobs have people looked into or gotten that utilize the same skills a SM would have?

Have you done a search on this? I am in paperwork hell but will try to find the topic name (tho someone else may find it first — PSMKay?) but this has had a deep discussion on all the areas where SM skills translate into real world assets and jobs. And — so many things, from wedding planners and event coordinators to pretty much any job that requires patience, organization and creativity.

Here's a more recent thread on the topic:
http://smnetwork.org/forum/employment/dear-abby-is-there-life-after-equity/

Try looking under the "Employment" section of the forum. I've seen a few out there, in case the one above doesn't help.

I've found that working as a personal assistant utilizes a lot of the same skills, organization, people skills, and adaptability especially.

I work in nonprofit development, which I find has a lot of the same skills -- communicating between departments and with funders, tracking deadlines & deliverables, event planning, etc. For a long time, our Development Director was also an SM, so she totally understood if I needed to change my schedule for tech. :)
