Negotiating pay
« on: Jan 06, 2015, 03:32 am »
Hi all,

Forgive me in advance if this has been talked about somewhere else on this forum.

I was wondering if anyone had some tactics they could share about negotiating payments. I recently took this job at one stipend, but want to negotiate getting my stipend raised before I sign a contract. How would you go about doing this?

Thanks!

Be open and honest.

"I think the stipend is a little on the low side, is there any room to negotiate this up a bit? I understand that this isn't a wage and designed to cover my costs, but with the current stipend I run the risk of  loosing money which means it may not be financially viable for me to take the job."

It's tricky, as someone who does hiring, to accept a job and the want to negotiate a higher fee at that point doesn't always sit right with me, unless new information between the "yes" and the contract signing rises up.

I second what Matthew said, as someone in the same position.

Know that sometimes the budget is what it is, so while you are open to request an increase, be aware that the producer can come back and say "Sorry, we don't have more money for you." At that point, it's up to you to take it or leave it, as there is always someone else who will take it.
