Putting ASM on Resume at Equity Theatre
« on: Apr 16, 2014, 11:08 am »
Good Morning Stage Managers!!
I just wanted to pick your brains about something. I have done a couple of shows at a LORT C theatre under the title of "Head Production Assistant." The reason we are given this title is because the LORT rulebook defines "Assistant Stage Manager" as a member of Equity even though we perform all of the assistant stage managerial duties. Should just leave the Production Assistant" title on my resume instead of changing it to Assistant Stage Manager so it's not misleading or should the focus be on the fact that I was hired and worked in an ASM capacity?

Putting ASM on the resume would be a slight embellishment since you weren't on contract to do so.

What about listing it as something like PA (ASM Duties) or even Production Assistant (ASM) or Non-AEA ASM.

Thank you Matthew!! That's what I figured but I wanted to be sure. I will try and re-word things along what you have suggested.

But then I have a similar question...

I am currently the Stage Management Fellow at a LORT D theatre, but in the playbill, I am credited as ASM (which IS my function)... Is that going to bring me trouble at some point?

I was a production assistant for 3 years at a LORT D theatre. I always worked and was referred to as the ASM. Listed in the program as the ASM always (at the theatre's discretion, not at my request). My resume has always listed ASM for these shows, and in 11 years it's never come up as a question.

Maybe I'm wrong, but that's what I can offer from personal experience.
